Now, I'm not a stan nor a hater of GOT7. In fact, I remember when Girls Girls Girls came out and pretty much listened to all of their main releases up until Never Ever, which was one of the few songs in 3rd gen I truly hated. After that, I went years without listening to a GOT7 song, until eventually I heard Breath, Not by the Moon, and Call My Name, all of which I really loved and that restored GOT7's image in my head. Fast forward to now: I just found out they did a Killing Voice and was excited to watch it. Whenever I saw EXO's and INFINITE's Killing Voice, it left me with the overall feeling of, "Yeah, that’s why they're legends." GOT7’s Killing Voice, however, just left me thinking, “That’s it, really?” I think overall there was a lack of synergy that seasoned groups usually have. I also think it unfavorably highlighted the lack of skill in some of the members. Let me go through what I generally thought about each member: Mark – Not much to say. He was consistently alright, but he didn’t really have a moment to shine. He did the best he could with what he was given. Jackson – He has a naturally pleasant, husky voice, the kind that could melt frozen butter. However, all of his lines were just talk-rapping. There was nothing that really showcased his skills. I guess that's just the hand he was dealt. He did have a nice part in Not by the Moon, and I did overall enjoy his energy. But ultimately, it’s unfortunate that there was nothing here that really cements his legacy in GOT7. BamBam - I'm so sorry I don't want to be mean, but he sounded so bad. I was really shocked. He has been in the game since 2014 and he sounds that bad. Python is his song, he produced it, gave himself the chorus and yet he can't sing it. Disappointed, I have no Input other than that sorry. Jinyoung – He was really good! He’s quite skilled at switching from chest voice to head voice, and his head voice is decently developed. It always has just the right amount of volume and airiness, if that makes sense. Yugyeom – I think he’s a decent singer, but his vocal technique is quite poor. Specifically, he seems very tense and doesn’t loosen his jaw enough when hitting higher notes, which weakens his delivery. His overall performance was just alright. Jay B – He has such a nice voice, but I also think he has some poor vocal techniques in some aspects. He often sounds tense, and unfortunately, he wasn’t as good as I remembered. He attempted a belt during Not by the Moon, and it was not great. I actually felt quite bad. To be fair, he might have just been having a bad day. Youngjae – I thought he was excellent. He put 1000% into every verse he got. Honestly, as a casual listener, I never realized how dependent most of their songs are on him to add emotional weight. I really appreciated how his delivery showcased significant improvement. He was able to deliver powerful vocals without sounding strained, and even added some vibrato in some places. I also appreciated that he could actually sing the line "icon" in its intended register. Overall I was very surprised, he was definitely the MVP in this video. Overall, there were too many just ok performances and and a lack of synergy imo. There are a lot of spaces where they could have harmonized to elevate the music instead of just adlibbing random "oooohhh" or "Ya Ya Ya" everywhere. I specifically got annoyed when they did those for Not by the Moon, that's not the song for those types of hype chants. I just want to emphasize that I don’t hate GOT7 or any of its members at all. I realized most of the groups I stan (Skz, Ateez, P1harmony, Itzy) all give off found family, close knit, bestie vibes. Before you come crucifying me, I've been a fan since the OMG era, and I really love the girls and their refreshing concepts, and I like that they're active. Still... I think they should ease up a little. They haven't stopped since the break between Hwaa and Tomboy, and this is worrying, especially for the members. I can't imagine what Soyeon's head must be like right now. It's good to be active, but they've had three world tours (or two, I don't remember exactly), and they have two or three comebacks each year. Along with Twice, they must be the most active group each year. I say this because sometimes I worry about girls. Having so many full comebacks with so little time... I hope they have time to rest properly. Now they are going to make an album in Japanese, which they cannot participate in producing due to their schedules... I just love kpop male yearning/desperate songs. Y si fuera ella is definitely one of them and I just can’t stop listening to it. I made a playlist but most of them don’t have the amount of yearning like Y si fuera ella does. I’ve recently stopped being as into Stray Kids. But I feel like if “13” by Han was on Spotify, I would 100% still be insanely invested in them. I just don’t feel like I vibe with their usual music as much anymore, but Han’s solo songs are still my Roman Empire. Before I start this is NOT targeted at any specific group or artist but a general trend I’ve noticed in the past 3-4 years. I’ve recently felt like k pop group sales have gotten on average so high they’re no longer impressive and, in my opinion, no longer are accurate representations of their popularity. And this goes for both groups I stan and those I don’t, as well as groups dominating the industry and those that are mid size. I feel like especially in the past year or so somehow so many records, especially debut records, have been broken by such large margins yet these groups fail to meet the popularity scale the previous record holders have held. Either they don’t sell as well in their subsequent comebacks or their songs don’t chart/ get streamed / are iconic or recognizable (both internationally AND locally) to the proportions I’d expect them to be because of these sales. And the main reason I made this post is because it seems that now the “criteria” for a mid size group in terms of sales is close to being 100k and OVER, sometimes this being expected as first week or first day sales and I don’t know I just can’t wrap my head around how SO many groups MEET that yet they struggle to chart locally / internationally and other numbers would point to them being truthfully lower when it comes to actual fandom size. And furthermore if a group deemed popular sells 300k or less first day they’re now considered “flops” or losing popularity. I want to make it clear this is NOT to downplay accomplishments, 100k is an incredible number but I just find it so unbelievable and a standard that will inevitably get so much higher. To be considered “leaders” it’s expected to sell 1 million first day or preorder, you could sell 400k and still be considered “nugu”. I haven’t been a k pop stan for long, especially to experience 1st-3rd gen in its full but I looked up some of the TOP and I mean like household name groups’ sales, and they are comparable / on par to groups considered to be “nugu” (exaggerated) and mid size in modern standards. So again HOW and WHY do fans put so much effort in sales yet struggle to at least inflate some other numbers? I 100% understand that k pop becoming so globally accesible, overconsumption and collection has a play in, in fact it’s probably the sole reason for it, but it still just seems so ridiculous to me and I personally think furthers my point that sales no longer mean shit. How am I supposed to be impressed at 1 million sales when there were 50 versions and 1 photo card per version? like no duh. Idk if I were an idol and i saw my album sold 300k first week yet we’re struggling to have streaming, YouTube, award and fan numbers I’d be pretty bummed out. I guess to close it out, whenever I see album sales I kinda raise my eyebrow and go “huh” and scroll. I don’t want to be suspicious especially when sometimes it’s my own favorite artists but I feel like these numbers are still something so many k pop fans put so much weight to, especially in fan wars, when I’m over here even questioning the numbers of some of my favorite groups. This is going to be a very short post, lol. I understand wanting to brag about our fave idols/groups achievements because it’s not easy to achieve anything. But, these days it’s like the stans only want to their faves to achieve something, or bring up these accomplishments so they can use them for stan wars, sometimes even goign as far as making shit up. I know I’d be pissed if were an idol and came online to see my achievements being used as a weapon to shit on my friends, because my fans just can’t be normal and celebrate me for what I’ve done or how much work I put in. I’ve been seeing clips of JYP talking about different topics for years like religion, science, etc. And I wondered if anyone has looked into what he’s actually saying and what it is? Does it have any connection to the company? how far back has he been doing this? Who is his target audience for these things? It sounds like he’s explaining some religious cult.
