5. What Looks To Define 5th Gen Boy Groups (other than Conceptual trends)

  • 56 minutes ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

In this post I have explored what I think are the non conceptual/ musical trends that have defined this era of groups. As it seems we’ll soon have to 2 major boy groups (SMTR25 and Boys II Planet) debut with mature concepts made me wander what would make them 5th Gen as their vibes will be very different to most the boy groups we got so far. Furthermore I am only really familiar with 5th gen boy groups so my observations are centred on them. (If I picked up something that was already a trend do say) Commercial Success 1. Korean Domestic Charting with staying power ZEROBASEONE, RIIZE, NCT Wish, BOYNEXTDOOR TWS and CORTIS have all charted in Korea with BOYNEXTDOOR and TWS both having tracks that have continued to chart well months after release. 1. Strong sales across the board and from the beginning with solid growth for some have been around for longer (based of last comeback) 4 Million Sellers (ZEROBASEONE 1.5M, RIIZE 1.4M, NCT Wish 1.4M and BOYNEXTDOOR 1.4M) 5th Gen Major Total: 5.7M total (BOYNEXTDOOR and NCT Wish became million sellers for the first time this year) 11 groups with more than a 100k sales (TWS 600k, CORTIS 400k, AHOF 350k, Idntt (Unevermet) 350k, KickFlip 300k, CLOSE YOUR EYES 300k, Xikers 200k, NEXZ 200k, NouerA 200k and EVNNE 150k NOWZ 150k). 5th Get Mid Tier 3.3M total (All but 5 of the mid tier groups (TWS, EVNNE, Xikers, NEXZ, NOWZ) are from this year) 5th Gen Total 9M Their are 5 major 4th Gen Groups (million sales +): Stray Kidz 3M, Enhypen 2.1M, TXT 1.7M, Treasure 1M and Ateez 600k ? (This was only was one album version I couldn’t figure out if there was another) 4th Gen Major Total: 8.4M This bulk of mid tier groups compared to the 4 currently still active 4th Gen groups of The Boyz 450k, P1harmony 300k, Cravity 250k, and Oneus 30k (unclear how this happened but previous sales better with retained brand recognition) (most of which only achieved these sales late in their careers all debuting with less than around 50k sales) 4th Gen mid tier total: 1.1M 4th Gen Total 9.5M Types of groups and members 1. Quantity of International idols Overall number of idols total: 100 International member percentage: 32% Korean 68 Japanese 16 Chinese 7 Canadian 2 American 1 Australian 1 Taiwanese 1 Hong Konger 1 Chinese - Korean 1 Thai 1 Filipino 1 Total of top 4 groups: 23 Korean 14 Japanese 4 Chinese 3 Canadian 1 American 1 Total of mid tier Groups: 77 Korean 54 Japanese 12 Chinese 4 Canadian 1 Australian 1 Taiwanese 1 Hong Konger 1 Chinese - Korean 1 Thai 1 Filipino 1 Fourth Gen major and mid tier total: 56 21% international Korean 42 International 12 (If people are interested in a more detailed breakdown for both with number of groups with foreign members, average number of foreign members per group and breakdown by region I may make a follow up) First debuts for some countries (I think I could be wrong do say if there was earlier debuts) Such as the Philippines (JL in AHOF), Indonesia (Zayyan in XODIAC), North Korean (Hakseong in BE BOYS) Localised groups / Cross National groups (The most successful was so far are the Japanese groups) (NCT Wish and NEXZ), there have also been smaller less successful survival show groups with the same idea such as HORI7ON (Korean and Filipino), THE7 (Korean and Thai) and POLARIX (Korean and Chinese) Survival Shows 1. Survival Show Boom (with large international audiences) (Post Boys Planet) 2. Successful survival show groups 3 fan vote 1 mixed system 3 judge pick 1 spin-off group 3. International PO1s Zhang Hao (Boys Planet - Chinese), Bing Fan (Makemate1 - Chinese), Ma Jiangxiang (Project 7 - Chinese), JL (Univese League - Filipino) and Hyo (B:myboyz - Japanese) Disputable mention for Yura (Japanese) from Fan Pick - reason for dispute P02 member was rigged out so ranks in question 4. Multi show contestants 5. Those repeat characters debuting eventually 6. The legacy of Boys Planet Several former Boys planet members went on to debut in other survival show groups some of those being: Yuseop in NouerA, Ma Jiangxiang in CLOSE YOUR EYES, Cha Woongki and Shuaibo in AHOF (If I missed any please do say) Notable Pre debut groups 1. Trainee A 4 went on to debut 2 in HYBE 1 YG (Yorch is in a small group called POW) 1 is in the pre-debut group SMTR25 elsewhere 2 may debut in boys 2 planet 2. Chromosome entertainment to NouerA Entertainment 2 debuted in NouerA and 2 may debut from Boys II Planet (I think the jellyfish boy planet group should be on this list but I am not sure who are and where the others debuted (I know Gunwook and Yuseop) Abstract: The industry trend I think that defines 5th gen is its place as the first generation post the global explosion of K-pop and the subsequent market fragmentation evidenced by the number of groups with good sales. The other factors that ties SMTR25 and Boys II Planet within 5th Gen by their share of International members, ties to Trainee A and Chromosome Entertainment, the international audience of Boys II Planet and likely strong debut sales in terms of factors. The last thing is based on the key points theory of K-pop Gen’s which consider key switch point years to be the turn over years those being 1st Gen had the first boy group, (I’m unsure of what defined the start of second Gen), 3rd Gen had the viral hit of Gangnam Style, 4th Gen is post BTS explosion globally I believe 5th Gen’s key point was Boys Planet due to the boy group survival show boom it triggered. Please add anything I may have missed or comparison points to other generations. submitted by /u/ARG_obesessed [link] [comments]

6. Can Someone Explain What Is Likely Going On With Girlset’s Budget?

  • 1 hour ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

They debuted a couple weeks ago now so I know that this is a bit late, sorry if someone has already asked or answered this. VCHA’s music videos seemed to be much higher quality than all versions of Commas so is there any reason why JYPE has seemed skimped out of their debut video? Even nugu groups with 10k sales first week have had seemingly more money poured into them. JYPE is a huge company that can afford to invest in a girl group that hasn’t turned a profit yet. It’s even weirder considering this was made to be a re-debut, you would kind of expect a company to invest more. submitted by /u/DowntownFee1 [link] [comments]

15. Unemployed K-girl group fan listens to every girl group discography —Day 4: V

  • 4 hours ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

I am listening to all the singles, EPs and albums by k pop and K-pop-adjacent girl groups on a tier list. Including: Original Japanese singles/albums Subunits and solos under the group profile OSTs* Not including: Solos and subunits outside of group albums Any covers, remastered versions or remixes First slide(s) will be a ranking of the group, and the second slide(s) will be a ranking in the context of other girl groups. These are just my personal opinions; music is subjective! What I like and how I rank these songs may not line up with your own tastes. I won’t take into account scandals, popularity, or other outside factors. Just the music itself. For V, I listened to the following groups: VCHA/GIRLSET, VIVIZ, VVS, VVUP I decided to combine VCHA and Girlset since they only have one song so far and I know the G section will be a big one to go through. VCHA’s discography, too me, is weak. XO call me is probably my favorite but the production isn’t there, in my opinion. Not a whole lot to say about them; commas do give me some hope, though. All I know is that JYP is a generational fumbler. Top 3: XO Call Me Y.O.Universe Girl of the Year Bottom 3: Ready for the World Only one Favorite Girl VIVIZ was a step above VCHA; they had some really great songs. Tweet Tweet was quite literally music to my ears; I was NOT expecting that chorus, but it was magical. They also do a good job at exploring different genres and sounds while sticking to a bright, retro pop. Top 3: Tweet Tweet Maniac Untie Bottom 3: Siesta Love you like Loveade VVS was by far my favorite group out of the V bunch, definitely the closest to my taste out of the four. The only gripe I have with their discography is that the people in charge of them decided to put an under 2 minute intro, interlude, and outro in an 8 song long album. I need them fired IMMEDIATELY; these songs could've been normal length songs. It just felt like they were too lazy to flesh out these tracks, so they slapped these labels on them and called it a day. I looked up the group on reddit to see what people thought and I saw that alot of people didn’t like that “sleepy like Biden” line, but I found it kind of fun, and I’m a democrat. It was a refreshing change from the boring, cookie-cutter rap lines we usually get in K-pop. Even if it’s a little off the wall (and the girls might not even know who Biden is), I’ll always appreciate these kinds of lines because i think the best rappers make their listeners a little uncomfortable. Top 3: D.I.M.M Facts Touch It Bottom 3: Free Shine New phone VVUP I think this was the least popular group I listened to so far, so I was interested to see what their music would provide. The songs are ok but not alot of production quality; then again, they're from a small company and VVUP seems to be their only group so I'm not too nitpicky. They also have a small discography, but they seem to be still active so keep an eye out for these nugus! I'm not going to do a top/bottom 3 because there aren't enough songs to make that list and frankly, I don't have a top 3 to begin with. I'd like to hear everyone's opinions on these group's music as well! submitted by /u/Armys_blink_once [link] [comments]

16. Any newer groups that have great vocals and a discography that shows it off?

  • 4 hours ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

I got into K-pop via EXO, Mamamoo, Red Velvet, etc, and no matter what your opinion on them, you can’t deny that their vocals are stellar. Are there any fourth and fifth gen groups that have comparable vocal abilities and a discography that lets them show it off? Illit and Nmixx come close, but their discographies have a lot of synth and didn’t really allow their vocal abilities to shine. submitted by /u/eatP1 [link] [comments]

18. Somi has the potential to become the Charli XCX of K-pop if she is managed properly.

  • 5 hours ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

After listening to her songs, I noticed that most of them lean toward electropop. This is great, but I understand why she is not as big as she could be, since her music does not really match the way her management is promoting her. At present, Somi’s promotions mainly follow the usual path for K-pop idols through music shows, TikTok challenges, and other usual activities. Don’t get me wrong, I understand that she does this because she’s a K-pop idol in the first place. However, she could have greater potential if her management adopted marketing strategies that better fit the type of music she releases. Her tracks would actually gain more noise if they were positioned as international party anthems instead of being treated as regular K-pop title tracks. I think other people notice this as well. I often see comments on her posts saying that her songs would hit harder if they were promoted as club bangers or festival-ready tracks for global audiences. Look at Charli XCX, the reason her songs are big now is because her management allows her to promote them consistently and in ways that match her sound. Like Charli, Somi already has the electropop sound, but she lacks the branding, positioning, and marketing that would allow her to succeed in the global alt-pop and party scene. submitted by /u/why_dmn [link] [comments]
