I just got into kpop this year. I was first introduced to TWICE, then later on LSF. I attended both concerts in the Philippines, and I think I enjoyed LSF's concert more, even though I'm more invested in TWICE. Both are extremely talented and have great discography, but LSF is more engaging and interactive in the concerts. There was even a point where they asked the crowd to stand up and vibe/enjoy with the music. Though of course TWICE's production was better and there was solo performances. It felt like LSF's was more of a party with them and the crowd whereas TWICE's was more of a presentation of performances, if that makes sense. Great voices are everywhere in kpop, but some idols just have that very distinct vocal colour/ way of singing that stands out amongst all others. The kind that you'd immediately recognise anywhere. They might not be the main/ best/ your favourite vocalist, but something about their voice sets them apart. I love voices like that. My picks are:- Sunghoon of ENHYPEN: very distinct, I'd recognise his voice in a multitude of others. D.O/ Kyungsoo of EXO: breathtaking voice, but more so in the way he pronounces words. Maki of &team: Something in his voice perfectly scratches an itch in my brain. Jihyo of TWICE: No explanation needed lol. Godly voice legitimately. There are SO many more I want to mention, but I wanna see if anybody else comments them. So, I'm curious, what are your picks? But if you think about it statistically, the odds are brutal. You’re competing against thousands, sometimes tens of thousands, for a single spot. Just being the pretty or talented one at your school doesn’t mean much when you’re up against everyone else’s “pretty and talented.” To be realistic, you need to get into one of the “Big 4” agencies — HYBE, SM, JYP, or YG — if you want any real shot at success. Over the past 20 years of K-pop, only a handful of groups have truly reached top-tier global fame — like BTS, GFRIEND, KARA, and LOONA. Those groups made huge money and achieved fame, but they’re the rare exceptions. For smaller or mid-tier agencies (except maybe Starship or Cube), even if you debut, most idols end up struggling and fading away. The odds of actually debuting through auditions are about 0.1%, or more realistically, 0.01% — meaning you need an exceptional, almost one-in-a-million level of talent. And here’s what’s even tougher: the people applying are already “the best” in their local areas. So even that 0.01% is based on an already filtered group — the real odds are even worse. Then there’s appearance. You need to be extremely attractive by East Asian beauty standards. For girls, being over 165 cm tall helps, and your looks must appeal to the Korean market — because agencies still prioritize domestic popularity first. Nationality also matters. Chinese trainees used to be common, but after political tensions (like the THAAD issue), agencies now prefer Japanese trainees, then Thai, American, or Australian — basically those who look East Asian but can help with global markets. Agencies are businesses; they prioritize markets with strong buying power and English-speaking appeal. So even if two people have the same level of talent, the one from Japan or Thailand might get a bonus point just for market reasons. Competition has gotten so fierce that even members of top Japanese groups like AKB48 have joined Korean trainee programs to re-debut. That shows how intense it’s become. So if you’re thinking about auditioning, ask yourself honestly: 👉 “Am I truly top-tier in looks, height, vocals, or dance among tens of thousands?” Don’t waste your youth chasing empty encouragements like “Follow your dreams” if you’re not ready for how harsh it is. The BTS story — a small company becoming a multibillion-dollar empire — is basically a once-in-a-generation lottery. That said, the K-pop industry isn’t all bad. It’s often criticized for being toxic, but that’s true of any major entertainment industry, even Hollywood. If you have strong willpower, even smaller agencies can still offer opportunities. Some trainees who never debuted went on to become influencers, actors, or dance instructors, especially in their home countries like Thailand, China, or Singapore. So even if you don’t “make it,” having K-pop trainee experience can still be valuable career-wise — especially for foreigners. In my opinion: 🎯 Height and looks come first. If you have truly exceptional visuals, go for it. Dancing isn’t that decisive — everyone levels up after training. Even TWICE’s Momo, known as a great dancer, almost failed her audition once. Singing only matters if you’re as good as IU; otherwise, looks come first. So unless you meet those standards, don’t waste your time — passion alone won’t carry you. Look at blackpink,undoubtedly the most hated kpop group on social media. While every kpop space hates them since 2018,especially kpop reddit and kpop instagram,they're thriving irl. They're some of the most recognizable and famous active singers right now,their releases break streaming and sales records,both solo and group ones,despite the fact they go on hiatus for years. They hold the record for the most attended gg tour in the world and they make millions each stops A good 4th gen example is lesserafim. Twitter hates their guts and they went through a huge online hate train last year but they are really popular and loved irl. The gp loves their songs (look at crazy and perfect night),they sell hundreds of thousands of copies and as far as I know sold out their tour. So the conclusion is that internet hate doesn't matter irl. Antis don't have the impact they think they do. A tweet or a reddit thread or a hate reel doesn't matter when the hated groups have millions of royal fans who clearly show up for them and draw out the hate.
