Western kpop fans – did your algorithm switch your ads to Korean after getting into K-pop?

No hate intended! Been a Kpop stan since 2020 and I had no intention of getting into Katseye when they debuted. Then their SIS Ep finally dropped I by no means became a stan but rooted for them nonetheless (mainly because I was craving more diversity in Kpop) since they were unique from the rest of the industry. But the tonal shift of expectations amongst Katseye & other Kpop idols is the reason I’ll never get into them. They’re too sexualised for a young audience, go clubbing underage, hang out with controversial people (Eg Tara yummy and James Charles) have yoonchae wearing provocative outfits as a minor & one of the members liked a insulting post about bp; these girls literally get away with anything & everything and the fans defend them hell and back under the guise of being “western”. This isn’t normal, half of what they do would be so frowned upon if was any other idol but if anything I’ve seen people almost relieved, as if tolerating their messy behaviour will separate them from the intrinsic Korean culture within Kpop. And before i get “but the’re not Kpop!”, as far as sound, choreography, management, and promotion goes they’re a Kpop group; impressionable fans who say otherwise usually imply it backhandedly as a dig against Kpop and Korean culture itself. We’ve all seen their fans saying “I’m so glad Katseye aren’t Kpop!” To defend X behaviour, or “Katseye are so funny and talented (random kpop group) could never!” Like it’s so embarrassing. Katseye aren’t any different from other groups besides being diverse and having twerking choreo, but their fans eat it all up like its revolutionary Well… the behaviour of the girls speaks louder than the fans honestly and they continue to swear, wear provocative outfits, etc to prove they’re “western” and differentiate from the rest of Kpop. submitted by /u/Ok_Hope_5566 [link] [comments]

I know some of the girls were taken aback at it at first because it was so "extra", but I truly believe this was literally the best name chosen for them. Like they truly lived up to it and made it their own. As a linguistics nerd, i love how it translates sooo well in korean japanese and chinese (even the english name is a great translation and is so fitting) and it is fitting that this group is the eternal national gg of korea and was asia's no 1 girl group at their peak. I have seen and heard a lot about fanbases in South Korea, Japan, China, Hong Kong etc. but till today I have never really delved into Taiwan's K-Pop scene. All I know is that idols still continue to do concerts there (which apparently sell out fast). Is it super popular across the country (perhaps even on par with J-Pop and Mandopop)? How common are public dance covers and random play dances? And where are some good shops to find albums and idol merchandise? There are no solid statistics on this, but based on the online and offline interactions I have had over the years, I think it's safe to say there are more multistans than single group stans in the international Kpop space. For me, stanning goes beyond just being a fan. It means following most of their content, buying albums to support them, and attending concerts whenever they come to my area. There is a certain threshold of time and financial commitment I actively invest before I consider myself a stan. I havent been stanning a group for a few years now, but I do have several groups I actively follow. I watch some of their content during promotion periods, check out their albums (without buying them), and may or may not attend their concerts if they come to town without making it an absolute priority. I generally like those groups, so I guess you could say I am a fan, but I would not consider myself a stan by my own standards. I saw a post earlier about someone saying they are currently stanning 12 groups, with 4 of them being ults. In my head, I’m thinking, how? How do you possibly have the time outside of your life obligations to keep up with them both in terms of time and finances? It has made me wonder if my definition of “stan” is not quite aligned with what many others consider nowadays. How do you guys define stanning? Why does MNET awlays close the voting sessions after a performance?! After the Rising stage performance, so many contestants started getting attention, Jiang Fang, Wonjun, Aoshi..ESPECIALLY Andrew because of his intro that went viral. If only the voting would've been opened during that week, Andrew easily would've made it to the top 20. Who ever keeps making this bad decision..WHEN I FIND YOU BRO, SWINGING ARM. Most of the contestants who got eliminated were from the Rising sun teams, and the few who survived were ranked SO LOW?! Our choices can easily change after a performance, i never even considered voting for Andrew & Wonjun until Rising Sun, i was full on ready to start voting for them even if that meant not being able to vote for contestants I've been rooting for since Day 1 anymore. Let's imagine a kpop version of Katseye, it uses the same training system but they mainly promote in the west, since the korean entertainment industry behind the scenes is very questionable and problematic. The group does sing in Korean and they are very Kpop-esque. Would the group be granted more freedom and leniency than a standard kpoo group, or would they just be branded as nugus, crash and burn? I feel like it would be more normal for groups to debut as adults, have less strict diets and be allowed to do whatever (party, date, swear, drive). Or would the mere fact that they are korean hinder them from accessing such freedom? I don't think the kpop scene is gonna be less toxic any time soon (not that the west isn't but its literally picking the lesser evil), so maybe this would work. Hi everybody! Me and my bestie watched kpop idols (the show on Apple TV) yesterday and I kinda fell in a rabbit hole afterwards. To make a long story short- what even is DR music??? the documentary made them look very incompetent and divided😭 how do they even exist anymore and how does blackswan survive?? they don't even follow fatou with the official account or the blackswan account despite her supposedly being the creative director of the group? I've been staning ateez since 2020 , I still remember when i listened to wonderland , I could never stop stanning them from then on , but over the years I've found something odd. I don't who is managing them , but who ever is doing the job needs to be sacked immediately! Literally their b-sides are way more better than their mv's !
