What it takes for a group to be seen as ''the top'' group?

What really makes a group the top/leading group at the moment? There are many repetitive posts all over many kpop subreddits asking who is the top group or who are top5 groups, and in all of them it feels like most people are unsure what is their priority when ranking groups. It's a bit like quicksand, one person will say ''touring and sales matter the most'', another will say ''streams and touring internationally'', and a third person will say ''korean popularity comes first''. It really feels a bit like the way people rate/rank groups is all over the place. So what would you say is the most fair and objective way to rank groups, without underestimating or overestimating unfairly? For example, no one is going to say that BP isn't bigger than Twice just because of lack of daesangs, even though traditionally daesangs are things ''top groups'' generally have. Obviously context always matters. Similarly, something I've seen often these days, is people saying BTS is no longer the top group because they don't hold the best-selling album. So in that vein, do you think there are specific things ''the top group'' must have like a best-selling album for example or the most streamed MV, that are non-negotiable because they are a priority for success, and are there metrics you would consider to weight less and be more malleable in their significance? And which? submitted by /u/silveraes [link] [comments]

CRAVITY’s most recent album “Dare To Crave” is so good, but receiving such little attention. I was so shocked to see that there were only around 600,000 streams for the title track ‘set net go’ My favorite songs from this album are set net go, underdog, and click flash pow Underdog made me cry, I highly recommend listening to it, it’s such a masterpiece and I hope that if you didn’t listen to this album yet you take a listen cause it’s so worth it 🙏 submitted by /u/mailuus [link] [comments]

48. Unemployed K-girl group fan listens to every girl group discography —Day 3: W

  • 8 hours ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

I am listening to all the singles, EPs and albums by k pop and K-pop-adjacent girl groups on a tier list. Including: Original Japanese singles/albums Subunits and solos under the group profile OSTs* Not including: Solos and subunits outside of group albums Any covers, remastered versions or remixes First slide(s) will be a ranking of the group(s), and the second slide will be a ranking in the context of other girl groups. These are just my personal opinions; music is subjective! What I like and how I rank these songs may not line up with your own tastes. I won’t take into account scandals, popularity, or other outside factors. Just the music itself. For W, I listened to the following groups: Weeekly, Weki Meki, Wonder Girls, Wooah Weeekly was my favorite group in the W section. Ven Para was my favorite song out of all the Ws too. I never gave it a listen when it came out because everyone seemed to hate it, and I wasn’t that interested in the group, but it’s so damn good. A very powerful, girl-crushy song, and it is reminiscent of an Everglow title track if that’s your thing. I’m guessing it got bad reviews due to it departing from their earlier sounds, but it's a win in my book. Overall, Weeekly leans more into the teen, cute pop concept, which isn’t really my taste. After School is very good, though, one of the cutesy K-pop songs I keep on rotation. Reality was great as well, a nicely produced ballad. Their last EP, Bliss, was pretty weak; it wasn’t on the tier list I used, but I would have ranked all the songs in “Not for Me.” Top 3: Ven Para After School Reality Bottom 3: Unnie Lucky Boom Chi Ki Weki Meki, WooAh and WJSN all have the teen, cute bubblegum concept that I don’t have a liking to for the majority of their releases as well. I did enjoy Weki Meki slightly more, though; they had a more well-rounded discography in my opinion. Top 3 for each group: Weki Meki:WJSN: Sweet Winter Cool Who I am WooAh: Love Thing I'll tell you Girls Love boys WJSN: Ujung You Got Pantomime There wasn't much that stood out as my least favorite of these three. I equally disliked all the songs in the bottom tier. As for Wonder Girls, their songs are good; I always appreciate the old-school R&B sound. If you like TLC, Destinys Child, or Brandy, you might like Wonder Girls. Personally, I prefer contemporary/modern R&B, with an incorporation of hip hop, electronic, and pop, as opposed to the more jazz and soul influences seen in Wonder Girls. Top 3: So Hot Gone Tell Me Bottom 3: Intro Like Money Sweet Dreams I'd like to hear everyone's opinions on these group's music as well! submitted by /u/Armys_blink_once [link] [comments]

49. Which idols are you eagerly waiting to see gain more creative freedom/a bigger hand in production?

  • 8 hours ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

My current answer is KickFlip. They're really new so they have plenty of time, and they have had several members' names in the credits right from debut. So I'd say they're on the right track so far in the matter. But I just remembered Flowering (spotify link for better audio) from a creative mission of their (sort of) origin survival show, LOUD and I was hit by nostalgia. It's a song by Do Minkyu, TNX Sungjun and Kyehoon, KickFlip's leader (the guy has a real talent for songwriting). One of the best original songs from a svs in my opinion, and it was made by contestants. JYP LOUD was originally intended to be a self-produced group. We will never know the details of exactly how that would've looked like, I remember thinking that maybe they weren't ready to go all-out with it Stray Kids style (though that's a high bar anyway). But I was excited to hear what they could make with the resources and guidance of the company (Yoon Min was also in the lineup at that point, so even better). Then plans changed, they went into a long hiatus and the group got entirely reworked with new members added. I really like them in their new form too, they're a well put-together group. Their newest song, Band-Aid is probably their best so far. The rock vibes are chef's kiss and a great fit for them. But still, I hope that as they go, we will hear more and more of their own creation. Now that I've finished my rambling, I'd like to hear: Which idols do you want to see or think would do well if they had a bigger input in production/songwriting or even just the general creative process? submitted by /u/Loud_Kaleidoscope818 [link] [comments]

50. Katseye is a very generic kpop group marketed as something more

  • 8 hours ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

I saw the recent vma performances and this reminded me of my views on katseye. Although marketed as some great forward thinking group they still act and behave like a kpop group. There songs and choreography is centred and still made around how other kpop artists are whilst they still to an extent can't express themselves in a way most global groups can because of potential backlash. Then there's the music which I do unfortunately feel is very bland and copy and paste. Each song feels similar and the song gnarly truly goes to show the emphasis that group put in sound rather then lyrics even though they didn't do well in both. Their choreography is unfortunately very mediocre too whilst the only decent dancer Daniela is still made to do the stiff dances the other members do with tasteless twerking as there signature move. It's a shame they're being pushed so far in the music industry due to perhaps there popularity rather then music. Just some thoughts I wanted to voice. submitted by /u/Interesting-Trip-233 [link] [comments]

51. AHOF fans vs Korean Rap (Cute/funny fan moment during AHOF's fancon)

  • 8 hours ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

Wanted to share this cute moment during AHOF's first solo fancon in The Philippines. This karaoke session was an impromptu one that played while the boys had a brief intermission to retouch their appearance backstage. Fans just randomly sang along with the lyrics on the screen I think the funniest part about this were the comments from fans during, and anticipating the rap section of the song found in various fancams (aside from the slow pause and realization to laughter lmao): (translated) "Oh, welp. ill leave it to you guys. ill be moral support" *stops singing* "Oh, this is group work okay? we wont be individually graded. Do your best" "what if we all collectively rolled down [the bleachers of the stadium] instead" "Woongki, i cant be an idol, im sorry.." -this is referring to a joke woongki told fans during promotions where if we did well during the fanchant, we can technically become kpop trainees "Bestie, this is so embarrasing *laughs and mumble raps anyway*" "Wait, what?! Come again?" (direct traslation) (the actual phrase was: "Ano daw?! Ulit nga?" - spoken in a sarcastic/teasing manner. i cant exactly translate it without losing it's funny nuances in tagalog but, it's like teasingly making someone repeat their funny/silly actions or mistakes) The cutest thing about all of this, is right after this impromptu fan karaoke session, AHOF went back onstage to sing their ballad - and all of them emerged cryingEven Shuaibo was still wiping his tears with tissue in his hands while they walked onstage (probably due to the very questionable rap /j ) edit; idk why my post was duplicated, but i deleted the other one. i hope it's fixed :') submitted by /u/rookiedany_ [link] [comments]

53. I'm genuinely interested in your opinions

Consider this as kind of like a mini survey situation. I started listening to Nct a lot this year and even though I am not a Stan, I find myself constantly floored by their music, and yes I'm talking all subunits-wish and wayv included. But my question to y'all, especially if you aren't an nctzen like me is-Aside from their more industrial (noise) or neo tracks like baggy jeans, glitch mode, sticker, fact check-(yk the vibes I'm going for), what other songs from the nct collective do you know and maybe love??. Because if I may be bold, their entire collective releases more rnb and other genres than noise music but maybe because the noise music are mostly title tracks their whole music is collectively referred to as noise music. I hoped I framed my question well?. Because as a casual listener that just started diving into nct this year due to my obsession with Walk by 127, I'm kinda tired of the "noise" music label that has been slapped on them, because the other genres they have outweighs the noise. I ask this as I listen to Better than Gold at work submitted by /u/Muted_Bodybuilder109 [link] [comments]
