I had high hopes for h2h's vocals bcuz they are an SM group. As time went on, I found their vocal finesse quite disappointing by SM standards. To be fair, their vocals are not bad. They are clearly well-trained. Still, they are not particularly impressive either. They come across as decent, which is unexpected for an SM girl group. Among the members, Carmen stands out as the only great vocalist. That said, she still feels weak for a main vocalist from SM. For instance, I watched their performances of “style” at musiccore in Korea and “gee” at musiccore in Japan. While the vocals were satisfactory, they lacked the strength and presence I usually associate w/ senior SM artists. In addition, I watched the recording behind of “the chase”. It was not terrible, but not very polished either. Ofc, I understand that h2h are still rookies. Even so, senior SM groups had strong vocalists right from their debut. Idk much about Riize and NCT Wish’s vocals, since I am not very familiar w/ boy groups. That being said, I did see Riize being criticised for their vocals at the Hanteo Music Awards. All in all, I expected h2h to debut w/ the kind of vocal prowess demonstrated by rookie Aespa or rookie NMIXX. So generally the prevailing thought and assumption is SM is not very forgiving in their treatment with their artists relative to artistic input and real say in what gets put out. So to my question regarding Aespa breaking SM on this is centered around two instances in the past year where the group essentially said, nope, this is happening. First, the concert solos: as far as I had known, things like this just didn’t get released, even the fist set of solos never saw the light of day no matter how much clamoring the fanbase did for it. The company held firm until the success of the solos strictly from fan stages basically forced them to release them, resulting in Up charting, hitting milestones for a song that didn’t even have a proper release or any real promo. The second instance is Dirty Work. A couple of interviews the girls have done during the promotion hinted at the fact that SM didn’t want to release it but the girls said, nope, this is what we want, and SM went along with them. These two things would kind of seem counter to what is known. What I’m wondering is if this is an instance where Aespa is too big for them to simply ignore when it comes to real control or can anyone give me other instances where an artist was able to somewhat dictate to SM what they wanted and ultimately have them cater to what the artist ultimately wanted. Red velvet and NCT 127 had eras where they could have done the same regarding more creative control so I’m curious if those fandoms have instances where something like this happened? Hopefully, this means that in the future, we get music from the girls themselves and does away with the clunky process they have regarding their submission process on music from artists. so many groups skim the surface with visuals and outfits(BTS,ateez,blackpink,etc) but the music itself sticks to Western pop sounds (new jack swing, hiphop, trap,edm , Afrobeat, amapiano, uk garage, rnb, mostly non-Asian genres ), I meant sonically/musically they should pull from Korean traditional music and instrumentation (Gayageum, haegeum, janggu, and piri ) that is embedded into the songs from beginning to end, not just one part( like intros, outros, and dance breaks).also the use of traditional rhythmic cycles like jangdan, would make K-pop songs even more experimental and unique. In addition to trot’s vocal inflections which is vibrato-heavy, could add emotional intensity, especially for main vocalists, and especially in ballad songs(vocally a lot of idols sound flat and sing the same way, with no differentiating tone,ex.heart-to-hear) they should try concepts inspired by Korean theater like pansori with amazing storytelling and emotionally driven performances.Even performance stages could adopt aesthetics or stagecraft borrowed from traditional Korean dramatic arts. While doing that they could take inspiration from traditional Korean folk songs and stories,poems, operas, plays, with a modern reimagining for international audiences learning Korean culture, it would frame Korean culture in a better light globally and add to what idols and the industry could offer, counter attacking the K-pop is “manufactured” and “fake” narrative, and that Korea is just a “homogeneous,collective, consumerous” country rhetoric. I am also aware that this can be difficult cause most groups have non-Korean members, and if not done tastefully could lean into cultural appropriation and a Korean nationalism/superiority narrative. So I just listened to Better Than Me by Wonho for the first time and honestly, I really like it. It’s got that early 2000s boyband vibe (Backstreet Boys type of energy) and I was super into it. The song is great, vocals are smooth, everything sounds nice. BUT… when I was watching the MV, something felt kinda off with the dancing? Like, I’m not saying Wonho can’t dance — dude clearly knows what he’s doing — but compared to the backup dancers, his moves looked a little stiff and slower. It’s not bad, just… noticeable? And I started wondering if it’s because he’s so built. Like this man is literally jacked. Wouldn’t surprise me if that kind of muscle makes some choreo look less fluid. To be fair, this is just based on the MV. Live performances might be totally different. But now I’m curious — did anyone else pick up on that, or am I just overanalyzing? Do you think physique actually changes how dancing looks? Or was it maybe just the choreo/editing in this video? No hate at all btw, I really respect him and the song’s been on repeat for me. Kpop is an industry that has functioned, internationally, as a genre. If you only listen to country music, you probably only know the top 1-2 most famous bands, or 1-2 of the most popular rock songs, etc. If you only listen to hip-hop you probably only know the most famous country singer, or the 1-2 most famous kpop groups. I know plenty of people that just don't vibe with kpop, and that makes sense to me cause I cannot tolerate country music. I've seen many attempts to find success in the nebulous ~Western markets~ and I've always thought, "but they can't *all* go mainstream. There's only so many artists from one genre that can go mainstream." Then Kpop Demon Hunters instantly had people listening to kpop that would've otherwise never heard it. I'm sure we've all seen the comparisons, Golden -- I AM, Soda Pop -- Dynamite, Your Idol - Halazia, etc. etc. It's unquestionably kpop. I guess it's just easy to watch this animated kids' movie that just dropped on Netflix, hear Golden, and think hm, that kinda slaps. I mean how would someone who isn't involved with kpop at all hear I AM - Ive? It just doesn't show up on your side of the internet. Tl;dr I thought kpop had some limit of how many people would really enjoy it. Clearly, it's much much higher than I thought. I hope to see it reach new heights. Side note: I really hope that TXT does a mashup cover of Soda Pop and Your Idol. Let me start off making a few things clear: I'm an Eyekon. The Katseye girls are all lovely, wonderful, beautiful, and talented. None of what I'm about to write is any dig towards them. While I don't think anyone is above some amount of constructive criticism, nothing of what I'm talking about here is a judgment towards the girls. I get anyone in the public eye with fans is going to have to deal with some amount of parasocial relationships (and drama), especially in the K-pop community, but that doesn't mean we should view unhealthy or damaging parasocial interactions as expected, normal, or acceptable! On to my rant: It feels like every other day there's new Katseye drama distracting away from just being able to enjoy the fandom talking about the girls. From a member being missing to the girls hanging out with Dream Academy friends to complaints about choreo, line distribution, and styling, on and on. There's always something, more often than other groups I've been a fan of especially when they're still so new. I've seen comments like "I can't believe they have fans like this" and "Why are eyekons so parasocial towards the girls?" I can believe it. And I can tell you why: Because of HybexGeffen. Like yes, ultimately, it's the fans' responsibility to JUST BE NORMAL when stanning a group, but the type of fans that have been drawn to Katseye aren't going to be normal because of the way HybexGeffen have marketed them - they have pushed Katseye towards a dangerous combo of people: The survival show and documentary were made to market them towards people who love both control and drama. The survival show was sick and twisted within itself, but that would be a whole other rant - the main point here is that any fan who jumps in at this point feels invested in the group because they feel like they had some sort of say in the group. They got to vote and feel like they were going through the trenches with the girls, working hard to get their girl to win (like a sports fan rooting for their team). They feel like they had some sort of control over the group and we see that mindset continued today whenever you see fans say how the girls should be dressed, marketed, dancing, etc. The documentary added plot lines, story, conflict, etc. into the whole ordeal aka drama. And yes, while for the girls this drama was years ago, for a fan jumping in now, it was 5 minutes ago. Their frustration or discomfort with a situation will be fresh and it's all because HxG made moments that should have been fleeting into a permanent fixture within the girls' filmography. Someone discovering Katseye and wanting to watch all that they have to offer will eventually come across the documentary (or discover them from the documentary) and have to process how they feel about certain ancient situations in real time, hopefully not leaving with a bad taste in their mouth towards certain members (or other Dream Academy girls). Either way, fans who are being pulled in here are already drawn towards reality television and drama. Those appeals aren't just going to suddenly go away once they're following the group. Especially because a lot of these fans are so young. Katseye appeared on Kids Choice Awards and in a bunch of teen mags. They've been asked even before debut of how they want to influence/inspire young girls. Obviously their fans are intended to be younger. And young people aren't exactly known for forming rational, healthy relationships with people they see online. On its own, there's nothing wrong with wanting a younger fanbase (financially, it makes a lot of sense), but what throws me off here is when combined with my first point, you're leading into dangerous territory and also their most recent work seems less kid-friendly than their first album. Wanting a young (under 18) fanbase is fine, but this does not feel like it's being done responsibly. So much of the foundation of Katseye's fanbase were K-pop fans who are also not exactly known for forming rational, healthy relationships with their idols. And this was so clearly intentional on HxG's part, I'm not even going to go too much into it (Appearances on K-pop music shows, Korean variety shows, and recently Spotify's K-pop On & Off). TLDR: So all-in-all, you have promotions that purposely draw in very young K-pop fans who love drama and playing Build-A-Group. While yes, fans should continue to be held accountable to their strange behavior towards the girls and taught why it's not appropriate, I think we need to also stop acting like it's some random coincidence that so many parasocial, drama-obsessed fans crawled out the woodworks to stan this particular group. HxG specifically marketed Katseye towards these sorts of people and that needs to be called out more. I don't even think this is inherently bad on paper, but when you look at it and the results as a whole, it feels irresponsible and like the fandom is being set up for insanity. Sidenote: I did not mention here their Lives because, again, I don't think any of this is the girls' fault. BUT I wanted to add this note that how often they would go Live + HxG's marketing definitely did not help with the parasocial interactions. The girls should be able to go live without having to worry about racist or strange, controlling parasocial comments (on their bodies, sexualities, relationships, etc.) But the kind of fans the documentary and heavy K-pop promotion have drawn in has unfortunately led to their lives and instas being flooded with weirdness. submitted by /u/Impossible-Pen-798 [link] [comments]

I went on a Johnny and Mark sinkhole on YouTube, and then got lost in all the NCT Dream clips, ultimately stumbling upon Jeno covering STACY'S Poppy clip. And it got me wondering: are there any boy groups whose concept is to take on the more traditionally feminine concepts? Additionally, given how popular idols' covers of girl groups are (fan meets and concerts), how come companies don't have the groups put out one or 2 tracks that have them take on the more feminine concept? And why is it that boy groups performing more feminine dances = taboo unless it's "fan service", but girl groups performing more masculine dances = ideal and applauded as skillful (re: BoA, XG)? It's giving me flashbacks to Cha Woongki's dance battle in Boys Planet and Eddie's audition from Under 19, where their performances were applauded, but you wouldn't see a boy group ever dance more femininely on a mainstream unless it's for fan service.
