I don't think I've enjoyed a Super Junior comeback this much since Play in 2017. Even when I returned to the group earlier this year, while I did like the comebacks I caught up on (especially Mango and its associated mini-album?), there were others that I was a bit underwhelmed by - like their Christmas album, and Show Time last year (which admittedly was a rushed cashgrab single to promote the rushed cashgrab tour that SM forced onto them). I'll admit my expectations for this comeback were relatively low because I'd felt like the music quality had gone down a bit, and I didn't want to have high expectations only to be disappointed. Even when they announced the title track, Express Mode, to be club dancepop, I was worried it would be their "how do you do fellow kids?" boomer vibe songs again like Show Time, House Party or Super Clap. Oh, how wrong I was. Express Mode, the title track of their 20th anniversary album Super Junior 25 (a callback to their first album in 2005 called Super Junior 05) dropped today at 6PM KST and I will tell you I have not enjoyed an SJ title track this much in ages, not even when I was an ELF when I was younger. It's quite experimental and like what the members were saying ahead of the comeback, it's nothing like their other songs. It has such an addictive beat, and it sounds so refreshingly modern and "cool" while also somewhat giving me Bonamana vibes. It's definitely a return to their more serious and mature sound which I've craved for so long. Kyuhyun, Ryeowook and Yesung in my opinion definitely stood out in this song - I loved their bridge so much. And it was a pleasant surprise to see Heechul dancing in the full choreo after 10 years, where he did so much exercise and PT so he could dance despite his disability! And the rest of the album? To me it's pretty much no-skip, and admittedly it's been a while to say that's the case for an SJ album. Even the more relatively underwhelming songs are bangers that stand on their own. I think Say Less was their best song and was absolutely outstanding, it deserves to be the B-side and I'd say it's definitely a highlight in their 20-year discography. Maybe my opinion will change later down the line, but on first listen I enjoy all the songs, including the ones I felt weren't top-tier from the highlight clips. My personal favourites other than Say Less are D.N.A. (which is also an experimental sound I was surprised that I liked), Finale (that Donghae composed!) and the last track Stuck With You which is a really sweet song about SJ and their fans sticking together after so long. And the Korean general public seem to really enjoy it - it went #1 on Bugs when it released, and 7 of the 9 tracks made the Melon charts! It's their best digital performance in a while so I'm so happy for them! Of course, streaming doesn't mean everything, and SJ's fanbase is notoriously bad at it, but multiple SJ members have stated their desire for this comeback to be successful so I really hope it gets the success they wished for! submitted by /u/admiralmasa [link] [comments]

Rumi: Rosé from Black Pink Mira: Yeji from Itzy / Soyeon from I-dle Zoey: Wonhee from Illit This is just my humble opinion. Are there any sense to my choices? No. Did I base it off personality? Also no. Do I think someone will create a live action? Looking at Disney, probably. submitted by /u/hufflepuff_firefly [link] [comments]

It’s not that K-pop now is bad. There are so many new groups that are insanely talented, and I still get excited about certain comebacks. But lately, I’ve been catching myself missing little things that used to make being a fan feel more… personal, I guess. I miss when groups used to go all-in on unique or experimental concepts, even if it wasn’t “mainstream.” Stuff like VIXX’s dark, theatrical eras, f(x)’s weird and wonderful aesthetic, or BTS during their HYYH era. And the idol interactions; the silly, chaotic behind the scenes clips, the show endings where everyone danced to the winner’s song, the music show MCs that became little friend groups over time. Now everything feels more separate, like each group lives in their own bubble. I know things change, and that’s okay. I still love K-pop. But sometimes I get hit with this weird kind of nostalgia. Maybe you’ve felt that too. What do you miss about K-Pop? submitted by /u/Seesawey [link] [comments]

I’ve always disliked certain group names that , and for whatever reason they’re almost always the survival show ones, El7z Up being the absolute worst. Other names I disliked include but aren’t limited to: ENHYPEN, ATEEZ, ZB1/Zerobaseone, IZ*ONE, (G)I-DLE (now without the G), TWS, and LE SSERAFIM. Mostly names that are supposed to have some kind of meaning or abbreviate something but end up being extra or being tacky. I remember being shook that they chose the name LE SSERAFIM seemingly just to have it be an anagram of their debut song IM FEARLESS. Just wanna add that I really like all the groups I mentioned, but the name was just at least slightly annoying to me at first. Like to this day I still don’t know what the “EN” in ENHYPEN means. TWS being TWS and pronounced twuss feels somewhat childish to me. But I’ve heard and seen the names so much that now idc. ATEEZ was not a bad name at all but now I know them as stripteez (what even is that group about 😭) I don’t know why but ILLIT’s name in particular is still annoying to me. And even more so when it used to be I’LL-IT which looks so ugly. The name itself doesn’t really sound catchy or pretty… I’ll it. I lit. Eyelet. Aisle it. I get that it’s supposed to be a contraction of I’ll be it or represent unlimited possibilities like “I’ll slay it,” but it’s always so confusing to people learning the group name’s meaning and pronunciation that it’s almost a bad name. Again, nothing comes close to the wifi password that is El7z Up but I feel like they could’ve given the ILLIT girls a more characteristic name especially because of their dreamy whimsical concept. Don’t get me started on the current fandom name. submitted by /u/choerry_bomb [link] [comments]

Quick not so quick backstory : My parents are both ethnically Korean, but my father immigrated to the states when he was in Middle School, and my mother immigrated to Canada at the same age. My mother gained citizenship before she married my dad, so I happen to be Canadian since birth despite being born in Korea. I was raised in Vancouver since age 3(2009) but moved back at age 10 (2015). As far as kpop goes, I discovered kpop pretty early on. My father was a fan of bigbang, and my mother of deux(1st gen kpop duo) and I witnessed the early Hallyu wave during my years in Vancouver. I then spent two years at an international school (~2017 June), and one year at a korean public school(~2019 Feb). My middle + high school years were also spent in Korea, at private schools (MS was a 국제학교, so most of my friends there had actually grown up in the states. vs my HS, which was pretty much full korean). Basically what I'm trying to say here is that I'm well versed in both the Korean + western (NA) side of kpop, and just the entertainment industry/cultural values in general. I've witnessed firsthand the popularity/growth of 2nd gen~5th gen idols here in Korea, but I've also kept in touch and interacted often with my friends from Canada/the States. I haven't seen many koreans in this sub... so if you have any questions, feel free to ask me anything!! edit: phrasing, grammar lol submitted by /u/Pepper_Wyme0602 [link] [comments]
u can disagree with me ofc this is just a discussion but i truly believe that one of the reasons that chanelle didn’t make is cuz she is half white, loads of wasian koreans talk about koreans not fully accepting them and even calling them “foreigners with black hair”, and i’ve noticed that illit is heavily marketed in soley Korea and japan, their concepts are ones that work well in korea and japan, their lyrics r mostly korean (or japanese), none of the members speak fluent english which is obviously perfectly fine but as a company they know if they truly wanted illit to be marketed towards a western audience they would need 1 fluent english speaker. illit is hybes asian marketed group and i truly think they didn’t to “hurt their chances” at that. now i know ur going to say what about txt hueningkai is wasian, yes but i don’t think txt was made as a group that is heavily centered around east asia. i know chanelle eventually debuted under a smaller company so i’m not saying every company does this i think illit is a new “experiment for hybe THIS IS NO SHADE TO ILLIT THEY R MY FAV GROUP AND I LOVE THE LINE UP THE WAY IT IS!!!! i couldn’t see chanelle in illit so i think it was the right decision submitted by /u/Aggravating-Start921 [link] [comments]
