Can include soloists and group members whether they’re still currently active or not. Only rule is they have to have debuted between 1990 and 2009. I noticed a lot of these mostly end up with 3rd, 4th, and 5th gen idols making the cuts, so I wanted to start one for 1st and 2nd gens for those of us who were into Kpop earlier on! I know not all comments can show up for everyone, so instead of relying on upvotes, just comment whoever you think should get the spot and I’ll count them manually. You can nominate multiple idols. So for a side project I made a small website that worked like a kpop term dictionary and to my surprise people really liked it. Ever since I’ve been thinking maybe I should actually brainstorm it properly and turn it into a real product. Not to make money or anything but I just have this weird OCDish urge where collecting scattered info online into one neat place makes me feel oddly at peace. I know r/kpop already has a glossary (shoutout to this one), but that is mostly the basics. What I want to build is closer to a real dictionary: up to date with the latest slang and with synonyms. For example, take the word 감다살 (gamdasal). It literally comes from “감 다 살았네,” meaning "phew, the persimmon remained whole", but people actually use it when something turns out way better than expected. In idol fandoms you see comments like 감다살 when performance, photo or stage blows fans away. A synonym for it would be 느좋 (neujoht), an abbreviation formed by taking the first syllables of “느낌 좋다,” which basically means “it feels good.” If a photo came out super aesthetic, fans might just comment 느좋 While building my prototype dictionary, I realized how many kpop slang terms I didnt even know myself. It made me wonder if all native korean fans automatically know these or if some terms are more niche. And sure translations exist in english but we all know a straight translation, even the AI often miss the nuances. To really get it, you need to know why the word was created and how it is actually used. That is why I think gathering everything into one properly maintained dictionary could actually be meaningful. Of course I’m not the first to think of this. I have seen some glossaries people made before but most of them stopped getting updated at some point. My plan would be different. I would crawl data and update on a monthly basis so it always stays fresh. But here is where I hesitate: would fans really use it? When exactly would it be useful for the community? Personally, I would love it since I am learning Korean and it is a fun way to memorize words but it only matters if there is actual demand beyond just a few. So if I built a fully fleshed out kpop slang dictionary, would it get traction? Or is this one of those things fans think is cool in theory but do not actually use? I am not sure why, but when I was watching Madein tiktok videos to check how they are all doing. I noticed something strange, in every beginning comment of their tiktok videos, you can see these weird comment with the same replies. I don’t know it weirded me out, considering their situation right now with that suspicious company. I uploaded some screenshots here but comments like “not the end”, “more of her?” with replies like “what hot content”. Scared me tf out. Really worried about them. There seems to be a hidden message in those comments or something. Such a wasted group and potential. Okay, so let me preface this by saying the reason I’m making this comparison is because BTS and EXO were once branded as rivals, almost like Vampire vs Werewolf energy. Group skillset: Both groups are insanely talented and stacked with members who are very professional in their own positions. Dance? Both groups kill it. But when it comes to rap and vocals, the differences show. With BTS, I was spoiled with strong raplines. With EXO, my ears are blessed with top tier vocals in Kpop. Honestly, I don’t really care about rap (this is Kpop, not the US rap industry), so the “downgrade” in rap didn’t bother me much. But the vocals? Ultimate heaven. Freedom & image: Stanning BTS felt stricter. Barely any dating scandals, which made it hard to see them as men outside of idols. With EXO, it’s a completely different world. Dating scandals, members married (Chen and Tao, also Luhan dear, are you gonna married or not?), and some even with kids. Like, I’ll watch them perform and then remember some of them are going home to hug their wives and tend to their children. It’s wild. Company treatment: HYBE may be messy, but BTS never had an internal war with their company. Meanwhile EXO... Bro. I cannot stress enough how SM sabotaged their biggest group. Multiple members sued SM. Half of the OG line up. 6/12 had legal battle against SM. A quarter of it left (Lay technically is still a member but barely present) while 3/4 of the members are not in SM anymore. Variety Content: BTS spoiled me rotten with endless variety shows like BTS Gayo, Run BTS, Bon Voyage, In the SOOP, all their little Bangtan Bombs… it never ends. EXO’s own group content feels criminally short. Only Showtime, Ladder, Arcade but not every episode has every member, and the episodes are short. Too short. HOWEVER, EXO has a lot of public variety content. The members have been on countless variety shows, and it’s so fun watching them interact with people outside their group. It gives a totally different flavor compared to BTS’s more closed-off variety style. Acting & solos: EXO has another advantage: acting. Literally every EXO member has acted in dramas or movies at some point, except Chen, who instead blessed us with multiple hit OSTs. And let’s be real: Chen, we want more of your vocals. Fandom space: Both ARMY and EXOL are top 2 on my “most toxic fandom” list. But when it comes to content, ARMY is miles ahead. I can find literally every BTS award speech with English subs. Meanwhile, trying to find subbed EXO award speeches? A struggle. Good quality EXO compilation vids? Harder to find too. For fandom-generated content, EXOL is worse than ARMY by a large margin.
