13. Why is Reddit so obsessed with Korean ā€˜popularity’ especially ā€˜general public (gp) recognition’?

  • 2 hours ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

Every few days or weeks I can see that there will be a recurring theme of how-all-important-Korean-popularity aka general public is for kpop. And almost most of the discussion and comments will dismiss any international success as if without Korean success, the international success is deemed ā€˜lower class’ or ā€˜unimportant’ or something to be dismissed/looked down upon. Now, we do have people on Reddit who on the other hand go towards the other extreme and think Korean success is not important but more than not - the posts are usually more of Korean success. Like X is getting bazillions of streams on MeloN - X is more successful than Y who actually got bazillions of streams on Youtube Music and Spotify but only have like 100k streams on Melon. Y is more successful than Z because Y is household name in Korea that even a great grandmother on the street in Korea knows who Y is but Z who has 10 million more followers thab Y on social media like TikTok and IG is not successful because no random taxi driver in Korea knows who Z is. You get the gist. Competition is one thing (because of the endless comparison and kpop made it into fine sport which is already a norm and I accept it as what it is), but looking down on groups who are not as successful as their peers in Korea is plain weird to me. Now, seeing that a lot of Reddit kpop fans seem to think Korean success is much more important than other types of success, I am interested in why you guys seem to think so. For me, success in ANY form is equally important for kpop groups survival. Be it international success, Asian success, Korean success, all around everywhere success, all are equally important. That is why we have so many groups surviving and thriving past the 7-year kpop curse - because each group find their own niche in success to continue as a kpop idol. It does not have to be just one or another. It is always multifactorial to me. Lots of social media followers so lots of exposure and social media presence, lots of album sales which usually related to fans dedication which is related to concert sales, lots of concert attendance for merch sales and money, lots of festivals appearances for money and exposure, lots of music show wins to boost idols morals, lots of CFs for money and indirectly exposure, lots of streams for exposure and awards/music show wins, lots of MV views for exposure and to an extent money (unless company pay lots for ads which cancelled out the money from views). It is always a combination of any of those factors for success to me. To me personally there is no competition as to which success is more important. Everyone has to carve their own niche in this big pie of kpop success from those multiple types of factors I listed above. I do not feel international success is more important than Korean success and vice versa. It is just a different form of success. And before anyone harp about importance of MeloN - lets not forget MeloN is already losing its market dominance to Youtube Music and will contiously lose as Spotify Korea is catching up too in this short time it is introduced in Korea. Maybe in next few years MeloN is not as ā€˜prestigious’ as we would think anymore - unique listener or not if they lost their market cap. And lets not forget how dismissive kpop fans are towards ā€˜fandoms’ vs ā€˜gp’ like gp popularity is most important than fandom popularity eg a group with big sales is lesser than a group with big stream. Like those gp will buy the albums or go to concerts in the first place by shelling out hundreds to thousands of dollars? submitted by /u/Many-Ad-9007 [link] [comments]

14. i’m losing interest in my ult group. what do i do?

  • 2 hours ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

i feel a bit silly making this post but i just want to express my feelings and if anyone could give me some advice. i’ve stanned bts since 2018, and have kept up with everything with them up until maybe this spring. i just graduated college and really haven’t had time to keep up with content and music. i haven’t even seriously streamed their music or watched their content in maybe a year. it all feels so exhausting. i tried to get back into them, but the fandom doesn’t feel like it used to be. i can’t deal with the same discourse and drama over and over again anymore. i never thought i would ever lose interest in bts. is this normal? i feel like a fake fan. i will always love them but i don’t really feel that connected to them anymore. this makes me feel so sad :( what do i do? submitted by /u/Ok-Signature-9433 [link] [comments]

21. Can riize's international presence ever bounce back from the Seunghan situation?

  • 4 hours ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

I was on ticketmaster and saw that riize were going on tour and out of curiosity checked what the ticket situation looked like for some of their north american stops and despite being small venues a lot of tickets were still available. I know in general this year has been pretty rough for kpop concert sales and even bigger groups like txt were struggling to fill out some of their venues but considering this is riize's first tour in the US and the venues are not arenas I was shocked to see so many unsold seats. I used to follow them pretty closely during their debut era up till maybe impossible and then gradually lost interest once i realized how sm was handling the seunghan situation and ik they lost a significant amount of their western fanbase because of it but i was wondering since it has been a while since he left if theyve been able to rebuild some of that fanbase? Is there any way for them to bounce back or are they basically just going to focus on the asian market? submitted by /u/PrimaryTomato3310 [link] [comments]

23. I hate that people are still posting Wonyoung's Side to Side cover.

  • 4 hours ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

This is just my rant and confusion towards kpop fans, many of them being Wonyoung stans, insistently posting Wonyoung's Side to Side cover. Wonyoung has so many viral and iconic stages and within Produce48 itself, you have her extremely iconic Very Very Very stage, which is not only age appropriate but was the performance that solidified her stage presence and showed she was center material. However, to this day, I see people constantly posting and praising her Side to Side cover on Youtube Shorts, Tiktok, or on Twitter/X and when people call them out, they always have some bs excuse about how theyre just focusing on her stage presence. Her Side to Side performance is disgusting. She was 13 years old and they had her singing and dancing to a song about having rough sex that has you walking side to side. It has been a while since I watched Prod48 but I remember that another team also had a somewhat sexy song but once the leader of the team realized there were minors on her team, she changed it to a more cute, poppy concept so its not like the concept of not sexualizing minors was not a thing. However, the adults around Wonyoung failed her and this cover is a very disgusting example of the kpop industry's sexualization of minors. I am just a year older than Wonyoung and I remember when this cover came out, there was a lot of backlash from international fans being disappointed in Mnet for this but I will admit that I watched the show and everyone was complimenting her in the performance and her team literally won and Wonyoung just seemed cool. Now when I look back on it, especially having seen her grown up alongside me, its so obvious she is a little kid trying to act sexy and I cant believe this was allowed to happen. How did no one find this cringe? For any Dance Mom fans, a similar thing happened with the "Maddie face." Abby was always glazing it and you'd see Maddie always winning so everyone grew up thinking it was peak acting just for us to finally grow up and realize how dumb it looked. While I think it worked for dance, I remember watching a Maddie interview/live a while back where Maddie said she was super embarassed by it. Not to mention all the sexualization of minors that happened on that show as well that didnt click until I grew up. How those moms let their daughters do some of those dances is beyond me but this isnt the Dance Mom's subreddit so I digress. Also ignoring the whole sexualization of minors part, it's just a very odd performance. Its supposed to be a sexy, sultry song but its performed more like a girlboss girl crush song because the members dont know how to execute the sexy choreography any other way, with some extremely random acrobatic moves from one of the members. I'll admit I thought the acrobatic moves were cool back then but now looking at it, its just so random. Wonyoung recently did a cover with Jinusean where she has a more mature concept but was literally just standing, walking, and singing and compared to her Side to Side cover where they have her trying her hardest to seem mature, singing lyrics about sex and doing sexy choreography, the Jinusean cover blows her Side to Side cover out of the park. Seeing her as an adult with a mature concept that comes naturally, it really just puts into perspective how inappropriate and ridiculous her Side to Side cover was. To conclude, I hate that people still post her Aide to Side cover. Its disgusting and its just not a good cover and she has so many better performances. submitted by /u/MaximumAstronomer747 [link] [comments]

24. have you had terrible dreams abt kpop idols?

  • 4 hours ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

i had a dream my friend became the ceo of sm entertainment from being drunk and applying for sm entertainment after seeing tiffany's highnote from mr mr (hes a fan of snsd and he really hates the song Mr. Simple by SuJu) so suju decided to perform it in front of him (and he was so angry per usual) he forced suju to go to his grandmother's village in burma (where his grandmother was born) and work as vegetable farmers the only reason suju managed to escape was bc shindong had the idea of using a bittermelon as a things to pick locks with and gave my friends grandmother a heart attack (bc bittermelons shouldnt have the ability to do that) they made their way back to korea and wore bikinis (dancing to snsd gee) to give my friend a heart attack submitted by /u/Minute_Ice_7434 [link] [comments]

25. Why its hard for nugu groups to survive nowadays?

  • 4 hours ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

13 or 15 yrs ago, I think its more easier for nugu groups to survive in 2nd/3rd gen era (if im not mistaken). Im not into kpop scenes as much as before, but can somebody tell me why nowadays its hard for nugu idols/groups to survive? Is it because the oversaturation in kpop industry? Or is it because big companies keep debuting newer groups...? I appreciate all insights & thoughts. TQ 😊 submitted by /u/LazyProfile2945 [link] [comments]
