This has been bothering me for a while, and I don’t really have anyone to talk to about it, but I’m so frustrated with how people are spamming ONEUS (on TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram) with the Saudi Arabian flag over a misunderstanding from years ago. It just keeps getting worse as time goes on, and no one seems to be talking about it! It all started when a tweet from Celebs Arabic and a TikTok video (posted by someone who just reposted the tweet) went viral in 2023. This happened a whole year after ONEUS had already visited Saudi Arabia. The tweet included mistranslated phrases from a fan meet in 2022 that claimed ONEUS said "there were no taxis. We partied in the desert and rode on camels" People took this at face value and believed it without question. The most frustrating part is that I looked into the Celebs Arabic Twitter page, and it doesn’t seem reliable OR official at all! There were no sources to back up what ONEUS supposedly said. The page mostly just reposts other people’s viral videos without credit, so I find it hard to believe people are trusting it without doing any research. It feels like a lot of people who don’t even know the group are just jumping on the hate train, spamming the comments simply because they assume ONEUS said something offensive. Some people from Saudi Arabia have said, "It doesn’t matter, they should have known better. ONEUS knew what they were saying, so it’s insulting to the country." But when asked why it was insulting, many just repeated that the camel comment was rude without offering any real explanation. Instead, the comment sections are flooded with Saudi flags, rude remarks about ONEUS’s music and appearance, and even comments mocking Korea. It’s honestly a little scary and confusing when looking at the comment sections and no one explaining anything unless somebody said something to them. It wasn’t until I saw a TikTok explaining the situation that I finally understood. Apparently, saying you rode a camel in Saudi Arabia can be taken as an insult because it implies the country is uncivilized or primitive. Many people are proud of how modern and developed their cities are, and they don’t want others thinking otherwise. I had no idea that saying riding a camel could be seen that way, and I really doubt that was ONEUS’s intention. They actually complimented the country, calling the buildings beautiful and fancy. Even talked about how they had to mind their actions to not cause offense. I truly don’t believe they meant any harm. They were probably just excited about experiencing something that’s not common in Korea and was likely suggested as a tourist activity. I'm sure there is something foreigners would like to see or wish to do in a country they have never visited. I completely understand why people would get upset if they believed their country was insulted. I really do. But spamming, attacking, and demanding an apology ( some even demand them to weep and beg for forgiveness) just for a comment about wanting to ride a camel seems extreme to me. It’s just frustrating because ONEUS really doesn’t mean any harm. They got excited over a camel and shared their story with fans but it was taken out of context and the wrong way. The last kpop concert i attended was kcon LA 2016. (the best lineup ever, if you ask me) After 2016, i just completely stopped listening to kpop. I’ve been to the weeknd concert, kendrick lamar, Sza, as well as huge EDM raves & none of them even come close to the type of manners and respect kpop fans have at concerts. I was at GD’s concert last night and the people infront of me kept looking back at me and making sure they’re not blocking my view & constantly moving their heads to the side / ducking so i can see better. (Even though these were inclined seatings and they were not blocking my view at all lol) It also felt like they kept making sure I was having fun because they noticed I was alone. They would often turn around and say things like “Its so fun omg😆” and honestly these small gestures meant a lot to me since it was my first Kpop concert after almost a decade. and my first time ever going to a concert alone. And i completely forgot about freebies at kpop concerts lol so many people randomly walked up to me and asked if i wanted a freebie. THIS DOESNT HAPPEN AT NON KPOP CONCERTS 😭😭😭😭😭 I’m korean but i still had a culture shock. Kpop community culture shock. before yall come for me, yes i know this is a topic being discussed over on twt right now but im not talking about WHO we think has star power, i wanna know how you guys define it. i wanted to discuss this since i was scrolling through threads and a lot of people bring up things like numbers, streams, songs, etc. personally, i feel like start power is when someone walks into a room, and immediately commands attention. somebody who can just stand there and make headlines. someone who’s seen wearing something and everyone run to get it. to me, that’s star power. it’s control and it’s attention with little effort. everyone knows that quote from Bang PD where he says something like “you can teach singing and dancing, you can’t train star quality”. Now, I do not like that man, but that statement is so true. I do think idols can GROW into start power as their careers and success go up, but I feel like having it means commanding attention the moment one enters the room. not streams, not music quality, not even stage presence. I have no doubt that K-pop companies will keep pushing harder and harder into the USA market. I’m pretty sure that push is only going to get stronger over time. The reason’s simple: the American music market is huge, and K-pop’s main demographic in South Korea is shrinking. There’s not much room left for growth there, just a slow decline. I just attended GD’s concert last night and I paid a lot of money for “good” seats but he ended up only performing in the main stage rather than the extended stage so the view was just underwhelming and i was basically just looking at the screen the whole time. Nos últimos dias eu tenho visto várias pessoas reclamando sobre as músicas que estão sendo lançadas, e está tudo bem. Ninguém é obrigado a gostar de tudo. Muito pessoas gostam de expressar o quão insatisfeitas estão com o direcionamento de algum grupo, mas muitas acabam se perdendo na crítica. Dizer que não gosta do mv, da dança, ou que a música não é do agrado é uma coisa. Mas dizer “espero que eles morram para pararem de lançar essa merda de música” ou “esse grupo é a desgraça do kpop” …. Eu genuinamente não entendo qual é a dificuldade em seguir com a sua vida quando você não gosta de alguma música. Just listened through it twice. I’ve loved pretty much their entire discography till now, but it breaks my heart to say that this release was… underwhelming 😢 There’s nothing bad about it but nothing stood out to me, and sadly i don’t feel like there are any legendary songs from this one(there’s been at least one in every single album imo). Overall, i didn’t dislike it but i was kind of bored throughout and felt like the tracks lacked in memorability. I felt there was something missing from most tracks. I feel most would’ve benefited from a more interesting outro or more climactic bridge, or maybe some kind of guitar solo interlude, especially Disco Day? That one needed some kinda dance break.
