4.668. Eyekons, HxG, and Drama: Katseye were destined to have unhealthily parasocial, dramatic fans

  • 1 month ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

Let me start off making a few things clear: I'm an Eyekon. The Katseye girls are all lovely, wonderful, beautiful, and talented. None of what I'm about to write is any dig towards them. While I don't think anyone is above some amount of constructive criticism, nothing of what I'm talking about here is a judgment towards the girls. I get anyone in the public eye with fans is going to have to deal with some amount of parasocial relationships (and drama), especially in the K-pop community, but that doesn't mean we should view unhealthy or damaging parasocial interactions as expected, normal, or acceptable! On to my rant: It feels like every other day there's new Katseye drama distracting away from just being able to enjoy the fandom talking about the girls. From a member being missing to the girls hanging out with Dream Academy friends to complaints about choreo, line distribution, and styling, on and on. There's always something, more often than other groups I've been a fan of especially when they're still so new. I've seen comments like "I can't believe they have fans like this" and "Why are eyekons so parasocial towards the girls?" I can believe it. And I can tell you why: Because of HybexGeffen. Like yes, ultimately, it's the fans' responsibility to JUST BE NORMAL when stanning a group, but the type of fans that have been drawn to Katseye aren't going to be normal because of the way HybexGeffen have marketed them - they have pushed Katseye towards a dangerous combo of people: The survival show and documentary were made to market them towards people who love both control and drama. The survival show was sick and twisted within itself, but that would be a whole other rant - the main point here is that any fan who jumps in at this point feels invested in the group because they feel like they had some sort of say in the group. They got to vote and feel like they were going through the trenches with the girls, working hard to get their girl to win (like a sports fan rooting for their team). They feel like they had some sort of control over the group and we see that mindset continued today whenever you see fans say how the girls should be dressed, marketed, dancing, etc. The documentary added plot lines, story, conflict, etc. into the whole ordeal aka drama. And yes, while for the girls this drama was years ago, for a fan jumping in now, it was 5 minutes ago. Their frustration or discomfort with a situation will be fresh and it's all because HxG made moments that should have been fleeting into a permanent fixture within the girls' filmography. Someone discovering Katseye and wanting to watch all that they have to offer will eventually come across the documentary (or discover them from the documentary) and have to process how they feel about certain ancient situations in real time, hopefully not leaving with a bad taste in their mouth towards certain members (or other Dream Academy girls). Either way, fans who are being pulled in here are already drawn towards reality television and drama. Those appeals aren't just going to suddenly go away once they're following the group. Especially because a lot of these fans are so young. Katseye appeared on Kids Choice Awards and in a bunch of teen mags. They've been asked even before debut of how they want to influence/inspire young girls. Obviously their fans are intended to be younger. And young people aren't exactly known for forming rational, healthy relationships with people they see online. On its own, there's nothing wrong with wanting a younger fanbase (financially, it makes a lot of sense), but what throws me off here is when combined with my first point, you're leading into dangerous territory and also their most recent work seems less kid-friendly than their first album. Wanting a young (under 18) fanbase is fine, but this does not feel like it's being done responsibly. So much of the foundation of Katseye's fanbase were K-pop fans who are also not exactly known for forming rational, healthy relationships with their idols. And this was so clearly intentional on HxG's part, I'm not even going to go too much into it (Appearances on K-pop music shows, Korean variety shows, and recently Spotify's K-pop On & Off). TLDR: So all-in-all, you have promotions that purposely draw in very young K-pop fans who love drama and playing Build-A-Group. While yes, fans should continue to be held accountable to their strange behavior towards the girls and taught why it's not appropriate, I think we need to also stop acting like it's some random coincidence that so many parasocial, drama-obsessed fans crawled out the woodworks to stan this particular group. HxG specifically marketed Katseye towards these sorts of people and that needs to be called out more. I don't even think this is inherently bad on paper, but when you look at it and the results as a whole, it feels irresponsible and like the fandom is being set up for insanity. Sidenote: I did not mention here their Lives because, again, I don't think any of this is the girls' fault. BUT I wanted to add this note that how often they would go Live + HxG's marketing definitely did not help with the parasocial interactions. The girls should be able to go live without having to worry about racist or strange, controlling parasocial comments (on their bodies, sexualities, relationships, etc.) But the kind of fans the documentary and heavy K-pop promotion have drawn in has unfortunately led to their lives and instas being flooded with weirdness. submitted by /u/Impossible-Pen-798 [link] [comments]

4.669. Make a K-pop group out of already existing 3rd gen and above K-pop idols!! Day 2:

  • 1 month ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

Rules: 1. each one has to be a different gen, precisely the one that’s above it or it restarts. Ex… if you pick 3rd gen the first day then the second day has to be 4th gen and after that it can be whatever other gen besides another 4th the day after, if it’s 5th gen the first day then it resets to 3rd gen!! It’s long but it’s simple. Also there can be the same group multiple times just not above 3 times… Lastly the group member MUST be 3rd gen or above or else I will not even look at it, the idol with the most comments I’ll pick. if its a tie I’ll put both but if its a 3 way or more tie then I’ll decide!! 3 simple rules is all… this is my first time doing one of these so I hope it doesn’t get taken down!! Also don’t mind the fonts, I did it in CapCut, Day 1 most people picked Wendy from Red Velvet and also I was grounded yesterday so let’s pretend I started on Wednesday… submitted by /u/Happy-Flight-4810 [link] [comments]

4.670. A song by your favourite group that one ever talks about

This song randomly started playing in my head this morning. Pink Tape is obviously one of the most talked about Kpop albums ever, but this song in particular doesn't get a lot of recognition. I think it's so good. What are your picks? submitted by /u/rainbow_gemini [link] [comments]

4.671. Why aren't there any boy groups who take on more feminine approaches/concepts for their songs?

  • 1 month ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

I went on a Johnny and Mark sinkhole on YouTube, and then got lost in all the NCT Dream clips, ultimately stumbling upon Jeno covering STACY'S Poppy clip. And it got me wondering: are there any boy groups whose concept is to take on the more traditionally feminine concepts? Additionally, given how popular idols' covers of girl groups are (fan meets and concerts), how come companies don't have the groups put out one or 2 tracks that have them take on the more feminine concept? And why is it that boy groups performing more feminine dances = taboo unless it's "fan service", but girl groups performing more masculine dances = ideal and applauded as skillful (re: BoA, XG)? It's giving me flashbacks to Cha Woongki's dance battle in Boys Planet and Eddie's audition from Under 19, where their performances were applauded, but you wouldn't see a boy group ever dance more femininely on a mainstream unless it's for fan service. Like, give me more Jeno performing a full cover of Poppy and Mingyu covering Sticky. submitted by /u/RaveGuncle [link] [comments]

4.673. Kpop fans are way too dramatic over bubble messages sometimes

  • 1 month ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

Some idol will send a good morning or stay safe it's snowing message on bubble and their fans will be all " HES SO SWEET HOW COULD ANYONE EVER HATE HIM HES ALWAYS THINKING ABOUT OTHERS" like bfr that is literally their job why would fans even pay for bubble subscriptions if they don't send any messages (apparently people get refunded if they send 0 messages). And this being the most low effort message anyone could ever send. Mind you the same people will be out flaming other idols for not being as authentic as their favs. AND I DONT GET PEOPLE GATEKEEPING BUBBLE MESSAGES EITHER ITS LIKE EVERY OTHER PAID CONTENT IF YOURE OK WITH OTHER PAID CONTENT (THAT YOU CANT AFFORD) BEING SHARED IN THE FANDOM THEN WHY ARE SOME MESSAGES WHAT YOU NEED TO GATEKEEP FROM OTHERS. (I do get sometimes they end up sharing spoilers but you can stil keep them in the dms) submitted by /u/robin_hearts [link] [comments]

4.676. Concert pre anxiety is the worst for me 😭

  • 1 month ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

I see a lot of people talking about post concert depression being the worst feeling after a concert, but can we talk about concert pre-anxiety? As someone who has experienced both and is currently going through concert pre anxiety (because in two weeks I’ll be going to Stray kids concert again) I can officially say that pre-concert anxiety is way worse for me, especially if you’re already an anxious person like me. Sometimes it gets so intense that I literally can’t sleep the night before. If I’m lucky, I manage to get at least 2 hours of sleep. Then there are those moments when your mind races through every possible negative scenario that might somehow prevent you from going. Right now, I’m in that state. submitted by /u/ForceApprehensive597 [link] [comments]

4.678. Don't leave negative comments on group's social media

  • 1 month ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

I was scrolling through Instagram and YouTube comments and a bunch of people were leaving negative comments. Most of them were pretty copy and pasted saying things like so and so is ugly, this song sucks, or the group/idol is a flop. These comments aren't funny or entertaining. They won't make your faves more popular. In fact, it can have the opposite as it gives your faves' fandom a bad reputation making people less likely to stan. What these comments are is annoying and loser behavior. You don't have to like every group I know there are groups I don't like but I also don't go out of my way to find their stuff and leave hate comments or if their post comes across my I just scroll past. As a fan, these types of comments are annoying because when I am looking at my fave's posts and content I don't want to be bombarded with negative or unrelated comments. Use the energy you are putting into negative comments to leave positive comments or idols/groups you do like or if you must make hate comments about a group do it on a site like Reddit or Twitter just not directly on posts or videos. submitted by /u/AfraidInspection2894 [link] [comments]

4.679. What’s something you’ve done/said as a Kpop stan that aged like milk?

  • 1 month ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

Obviously we can’t predict the future and K-pop stans (myself) are prone to saying dumb shit sometimes. What’s something K-pop related that you said or did that wound up not aging well? I’ll go first: When Omega X first debuted I tweeted about how cool Spire Entertainment was for the idea of bringing former nugus together and that they seemed like a pretty chill company. Later events uhhh disproved that to say the least. Taeil was my bias wrecker in NCT, I liked watching videos of him and bought a couple photocards. Those have since been trashed. This was mostly copium on my part as an UP10TION ult but I said that maybe Hwanhee and Xiao could pull a NU’EST for the group by going on Boys Planet 💔 On a more positive note I tweeted that there was no way Kep1er would be able to stay together bc that’s never happened for a project group before, I’m pretty happy I was wrong I said there was no way Hitomi from IZONE would redebut in Korea after spending such a long time post-disbandment just in Japan, I’m also really glad I was wrong about this one submitted by /u/silverdust29 [link] [comments]

4.680. What Do You Think About MissA And Suzy Situation??

  • 1 month ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

I’ve been rewatching some 2nd gen girl group performances lately, and I can’t help but think about miss A and the whole “Suzy situation.” I don’t want to sound bitter because I genuinely think Suzy is talented and worked hard, but the way JYP handled the group dynamic is still frustrating even years later. Let’s be real Suzy blew up almost immediately after debut. She was literally everywhere: dramas, CFs, variety shows, acting gigs, you name it. While that’s great for her career, it felt like JYP completely forgot that miss A was a group. The other members Fei, Jia, and Min were incredibly talented too, but they barely got the same opportunities or support. Eventually, miss A stopped feeling like a group and more like "Suzy and the backup dancers," which sucks because their music was amazing, and they had so much potential as a unit. The favoritism was just too obvious. And yeah, I get it Suzy was a moneymaker but it came at the cost of the group’s cohesion. Fast forward to now, Suzy’s obviously thriving as an actress (good for her!), but the way she’s distanced from the other members is noticeable. She didn’t show up to Min’s wedding this year, and Fei and Jia were there, and Fei even made a 15th-anniversary post that kinda shaded Suzy (her face was half-covered in the group photo 💀). I’m not saying they all need to be besties or anything, but I think fans just wanted some closure or a moment of mutual respect. Instead, it feels like there’s still some awkwardness or maybe even resentment. We'll probably never know the full story, but it's just one of those K-pop “what could’ve been” situations. Anyone else still think miss A deserved better? submitted by /u/Mystic_bhumiverse [link] [comments]

4.681. Popular members gets shit on a lot and fans lets it go easily.

  • 1 month ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

Being popular inside the fandom vs being popular outside the fandom. I've seen many instances where popular members outside the fandom, are insulted for voice tones, their expressions, their attitude etc, and don't get as much backlash for it compared to the members popular inside the fandom. I also have this notion that less biased or less popular members have pity stans, thus their schedule, workload, variety appearances receive more attention from within the fandom, and fans take more care to watch or stream those members. None of this is comfirmed, these are just my thoughts. Please, if you can, give examples supporting or going against the above. submitted by /u/Full-Amoeba5171 [link] [comments]

Throwback to one of the most underrated yet talented girl groups out there. As someone who was super into kpop during 2nd/3rd gen but has been out of the loop for a few years, I’ve been curious lately. What is this community’s general opinion on 9muses? Are they even on the radar for younger fans or are they more of a hidden gem from the past? Todays letter is C. Rules are simple just comment an idol you like who's name begins with C. Top 3-5 idols (depending on the amount of comments) win! Upvotes and comments count towards the number of votes so make sure to comment and upvote other comments mentioning your idol. :) You can comment multiple idols but please comment then separately so that I can count the votes fairly and easily! If there's multiple in one comment I can't tell who's upvoting for what idol so I can't count it towards the results unfortunately. (Picture is Itzy Chaeryeong) Our Alphabet so far: A: ✿︎ 1.
