Don't get me wrong I am REALLY upset at the condom situation. It was wrong to mislead, even if it's for marketing promotions, especially if their target audience is seemingly for younger adults, or teenagers. Their members are 3/4 minors as well. But I recently misclicked on their performance and got sucked into a black hole. I hated the song at first, but it grew on me. All 4 members have good stage presences despite just debuting a few weeks ago. You could feel their presence despite their stages being mostly bare. They sing lives a lot. With how messy the rollout of Blackpink's new song Jump was, I thought that this would be more of a "for the fans" song that won't do that well on charts and for sure won't surpass the peaks of Born Pink era but they proved me wrong. Yes they are Blackpink and they can't really "flop" at this point but this type of smashery was totally unexpected. The song is charting in top 5 of all kcharts, it's in top 10 on YouTube, at #1 on global Spotify for four days, entering top 10 in countries where kpop barely charts like Germany, reaching new peaks in US and UK. As well as #2 on Apple Music global and becoming their highest charting song on the platform and might even become the first kpop song to top that chart. Doing this with Justin Bieber, Travis Scott and Bad Bunny surprise releases is even crazier given how these artists are chart monsters. I don't want this post to be centered around the newjeans x hype lawsuitvtheres plenty of feelings I have about it but I kinda just want to talk about newjeans,the music and the relationships it had on me.Ive been a kpop fan since 2019 at the very beginning of middle school and was immediately captivated.The colors,the mvs,the music I was invested I was checking out new kpop groups every day. In 2022 I was a freshman in highschool and while I still loved kpop and was impressed by the songs released that year no group really hooked my attention.Even though I technically started being into kpop during the 4th generation 3rd generation groups really captured by heart groups like BTS,twice,red velvet,blackpink,dreamcatcher and more really stole the show for me. When attention dropped I wasn't even aware it did lol only finding about the release through tiktok but I remember watching the music video and thinking it was phenomenal which was a feel I hadn't felt in a long time with kpop releases.Yes I thought many kpop songs were good but that's kinda all they were for me.Good but nothing captivating,nothing that I would wouldn't forget about in like a month but newjeans completely shock me.Ive always really loved kpop concepts I've always loved aesthetics so newjeans y2k aesthetic was really cute to me.They had both interesting music and an interesting art direction and I was obsessed. All of my all time favorite songs was from 3rd generation but newjeans released hit after hit for me (my favorite being hype boy it's genuinely one of my favorite songs kpop or not of all time).While I still loved my favs no other 4/5th Gen group brought back that excitement for comebacks like they did.During this time for me personally the love for my favs was definitely becoming more nostalgic and not fully on the music they were currently making but newjeans made me feel like 2019 me again being completely wowed by this new genre of music I was introduced to. I don't know if there will be another 5th Gen group that comes close to newjeans for me personally,I listen to some of these 5th Gen groups and I'm even less impressed ever since all the legal stuff my actual interest in new kpop music has gone right back down.It actually feels like I'm listening to more 3rd Gen/2nd Gen discography than 5th Gen and I genuinely could name like 4 5th Gen groups I actually know. I just miss them tbh newjeans was the first kpop group in a minute to make me feel genuine excitement.My favorite 3rd/4th gen groups nowadays usually just leave me feel nothing in the end.I mean their not bad songs but to me they're nothing special.Their cute but nothing noteworthy.In my personal opinion newjeans was the only kpop group from 4th/5th Gen who could truly rival peak 3rd Gen music.I hope in the future kpop companies start striving more for truly phenomenal songs I want them to raise the bar.When I think about groups with truly phenomenal discographies I think of countless 3rd Gen groups and for a long while and still currently newjeans is the only recent kpop girl group deserving to be along side them. Honestly, if you would have told me which group was going to be the next big group in Kpop when the 3rd generation started I would have bet my life saving it would be Topp Dogg. After watching their debut song Follow me I thought they were amazing and we're going to be huge stars. They impressed me more with Arariowhich was a mix of traditional Korean instruments with hip hop bravado. They just seemed more advanced than all those other early 3rd generation hip hop groups. I call them the lost boys because all of them are lost to history except for BTS. They're mostly from small and medium sized companies that either didn't work or got screwed over by their label. Which is what happened to Topp Dogg. If JYPE openly teases about it, they must have planned something. (in my opinion) 2026 is their Japanese debut 15th Anniversary .
