Over the past couple of days, I’ve seen people’s reactions to Twice’s negatively received Victoria Secret performance, and in their defense, some say, “Well, they’re not a vocal group; they’re known more for their performance and dance.” However, is that something the idols say themselves; I see the same thing happen with Itzy too. I just couldn’t imagine putting my heart and soul into producing good-quality music, only for my fans to defend my possibly weak vocals by saying, “Well, they’re not known for their singing.” I think the opposite can exist too, for example Aespa. With the current tds4 tour of nct dream, in every performance or jeno fancam of no diggity, the fans scream s get extra loud during the part where they hip thrust to the beat three times because it's an attractive dance move. I'm not complaining. But let's be real, fans scream at these moves because it focuses on the idol's crotches. I wouldn't say I'm anti-hip thrust in bg choreo but examples like these point towards the inclusion of these moves is due to fanservice. Is it a reach to assume that these dances moves are an example of the objectification of male idols or is it to move along with the beat? I feel that this phenomenon has increased in the past 4 years idk how the past gen choreos differed. Actually, I know one. A horrific example is when 17 year old Yugyeom and Bambam performed with 20 year old Jackson on a stage in Thailand where they body rolled and hip thrusted, and unbuttoned their shirts completely. I just thought of another clear example of the objectification of teen male idols. In 2023, 2 days AFTER Hunter of Xikers turned 18, he and Junmin(aged 20 then) performed a dance cover of Die for you by The Weeknd in Japan. The "killing part" of the dance was when they showed their abs as they body rolled. In some performances, Hunter even bites the end of his shirt. Now, idk if he is told to that or not, but if he is, that's disturbing. The performance is clearly presented as sexy and hot. I find it convenient that both of these companies had the teen idols with their adult members. I don't care if these groups' fans are mostly teen-aged or even hypothetically that everyone in the audience was a teenager. None of the teen idols should have participated in these stages. Companies normalize the sexualization of teen/freshly adult male idols to their adult fans. I'm all for male idols expressing their sexuality. Kai's tour this year is a good example of that. I worded my last post poorly and many people were misunderstanding it. It is a fact that many idols are part of ultra religious Korean churches. And if you know anything about most ultra religious churches, they are... how do I put it lightly... NOT for that idol life... like AT ALL. That is weird that many idols are in said churches and I am not hating or disrespecting religion by bringing it up. Idk about you, but I actually live in a country with freedom of speech and also a country where religion is not above the law This is not even criticizing religion but criticizing religion is ine of our most protected rights and essential to a democracy. Obviously mainly because they have barely any time (and most likely energy) to practise a religion at a very religious level. But also for other reasons. Mainly, a lot of parts about being an idol are kind of against the wishes and teachings of the super religious Churches in Korea. Idols do a lot of things that are frowned upon by the ultra religious. Being ultra religious and an idol at the same time don't really mesh well. Recently I have seen so much people saying kpop is not creative. I even saw someone unironically say mainstream western pop is more creative than Kpop... and they got upvoted. Kpop is one trillion percent a creative industry and that is one of the best things about it. Creativity is a defining trait of Kpop. I don't know if it was the audience, but they were emotionless, and the groups seemed tired. Maybe it was also the concept of the songs, but everything felt soulless.
