15. Do you think visuals are starting to overshadow actual talent in kpop?

  • 5 hours ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

i really feel like visuals are straight up overshadowing talent in kpop right now. like yeah, looks have always mattered — even back in 2nd gen ppl called idols the ‘visuals’ of the group — but those idols still had to actually perform. now it’s like companies care more about how viral/marketable someone looks than whether they can sing, rap, or dance. you can literally see it in how some groups are set up. usually 1 or 2 members are carrying the whole performance vocally and even stage presence-wise, while the rest are mostly just… there for aesthetic. it’s not even subtle. and i’m not blaming the idols bc it’s not their fault, it’s how they’re cast and pushed. what’s worse is how fans feed into it. ppl hype idols for just standing there and looking good, while ignoring the ones actually killing it on stage or vocally. the fanwars over ‘who’s prettier’ vs ‘who’s more talented’ just prove how much the industry pushes this cycle. meanwhile, insanely skilled idols who don’t fit certain beauty standards get pushed to the background no matter how much they deliver. Now the bar feels like just being photogenic enough to sell posters and brand deals. nothing wrong with being gorgeous, but when it overshadows actual artistry, the music and performances suffer. that’s why 2nd gen and even early 3rd gen felt different. idols back then had to prove themselves vocally and on stage, not just look good in fancams. now you see idols who can’t even sing live properly or look bored on stage, but they still trend just for their visuals. makes me wonder where kpop is going — is it about image more than the music now? submitted by /u/No-Metal8032 [link] [comments]

16. k-pop fans unintentionally being pickmeshas about fanservice, older fans, etc.

  • 5 hours ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

Ok, so I was a 3rd gen kpop fan in 2016-2019 and 2023. I started paying attention again because Sangwon (ALD1) came back to participate in Boys 2 Planet. I’ve noticed a number of changes to both the industry and to the fandoms 1: Overt 1st and 2nd gen style yaoi and girlfriend style fanservice returning to 5th gen 2: ships and yaoi being a core part of fandom, not in the shadows of wattpad, mentioned occasionally I notice fans criticizing fans who are participating in the culture. As a 3rd gen Stan I’m even shocked at how far these idols are pushing the boundaries. At the end of the day it’s marketing and parasocialism bait. It’s so shocking when you’re not used to it. Rather than blaming the company for making the idols participate. Fans are blaming…other fans for participating with the idols are the company is intending people to interact with the product. Idk but it’s not making some of you look as evolved and cool as you think it does. It’s understandable and rather than me thinking there’s a problem it just gets repetitive. The industry is selling a product, people are buying into it and you don’t get a gold medal for not, nor are people weird for what is very over and intentional fanservice. Idk it just seems silly to me, but I have missed much of the evolution so I don’t know how we got here. submitted by /u/honeybadgerlanhua [link] [comments]

19. 4th gen drained the magic out of kpop, but 5th gen is bringing it back

  • reddit.com language

hi, im a former kpop fan who first got into it back in 2014. i was absolutely obsessed for years, but i completely lost interest around 2020. to me, that was the point where kpop started to feel off. everything was becoming way too westernized, not just in sound but also in presentation and identity. and i know this has been discussed a lot already, but i really do think 2020/2021 marked a big downgrade for kpop as a whole. 4th gen in particular just didnt work for me. i know some people love it, but from my perspective it lacked a lot of what made kpop unique in the first place. instead of bringing fresh concepts or creative risks, it felt like so many groups were just chasing global trends, trying to appeal to the western market at the cost of distinct identity. everything started blending together; same types of beats, same girl crush concept over and over, same heavy edm drops, same "baddie" image. i didnt feel that spark anymore, the sense that each group had its own charm or world to explore. innovation wise, i honestly think 4th gen was the weakest era ive seen. but recently, i stumbled on some of the new 5th gen groups like illit, unis, hearts2hearts, qwer, and kiiikiii, and it feels different. it actually made me feel excited about kpop again for the first time in years. i’m noticing stronger concepts, more distinct sounds, and finally the return of cute/lighthearted concepts, which i’ve really missed. it really feels like some groups are leaning back into what made kpop special. obviously, 5th gen is still in its early stages, but to me it already looks more promising than the 4th gen ever did. there’s a sense of experimentation and identity again, and i’m actually curious to see where these groups go instead of feeling like it’s all just going to be the same thing on repeat. so i wanted to throw this thought out there: am i the only one who feels like 5th gen is shaping up to be way more interesting than 4th gen? and if you guys have other 5th gen girl groups with this kind of energy that you’d recommend, i’d love to check them out submitted by /u/subahipeak [link] [comments]

hi, i’m a former kpop fan who got into it in 2014, but i completely lost interest around 2020 after seeing what it was becoming (way too westernized, but that’s not really the point; i’m sure plenty of people before me have already talked about how kpop downgraded around 2020/2021). but recently i stumbled on groups like illit, unis, hearts2hearts, qwer and kiiikiii and i really like them. it feels like kpop is getting better again, with groups that have strong concepts and finally the return of cute concepts. am i the only one who thinks 5th gen seems way more promising than the 4th, which to me was probably the worst in terms of innovation? also, do you guys have any other 5th gen girl groups in a similar style you’d recommend? submitted by /u/subahipeak [link] [comments]

26. Honestly I am tired of how some of yall "vote" on survival shows! B2P + more

  • 10 hours ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

With Ald1 about to debut and the end of B2P has now happened... I will actually say I am okay with the line up 5 out of my 8 picks made the debut lineup and I am pretty happy with it. That being said where is where my rant comes in. Some of you "vote" for "talent" but then you contradict yourself by voting against ACTUAL TALENT and yall justify it with "oh well they are too young or they are too old" or better yet yall have these weird parasocial relationship with "visuals" and vote for dozens.... which is it??? Also another part of this rant is the whole survival show concept in general I really think survival shows should start debuting 2-3 groups at once similar to the NCT brand. Since ppl keep saying "oh they are too young to debut a mature concept" fine then there needs to be a "young group" a "coming of age group" and a "mature group" so yall can stop voting actual talented people out because of that simple reason alone. Those people on that show are well aware of their own ages and are okay with it and they want to debut so you should as well. Mind you those "too young / too old to debut" trainees are more talented than some of the ppl yall vote for..... Another thing.... a lot of yall are lowkey borderline r@c!st and don't even know it... why in the world do yall think it's okay to say things like "they don't look ( insert ethnicity here ) enough" ... that's not okay to say and also shouldn't be a reason why you ARENT voting for someone... Also I will say... not actually looking into someone's talent based off of an EDITED show to make you vote a certain way needs to be studied... stop relying on edits and go watch the actual performances and clips of those invisible trainees yourself. Just because someone gets a lot of screen time doesn't make them good and yall justify this with "well they didn't get any screen time so I'm not voting for them" which is another contradiction because a lot of ppl who made it to the finals were some ppl who had little to no screen time they had yalls votes lol yall just pick and choose and contradict yourself constantly it's very frustrating. I've found so many talented ppl by just looking at their audition videos etc and if yall did the same it would actually HELP those ppl get visibility. Long story short alot of yall voting systems are ridiculous and need to be checked. Rant over. submitted by /u/No_Philosopher6682 [link] [comments]

27. I’ve watched my best friend chase this dream for 20 years… his debut song is finally out

  • 10 hours ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

Hey Kpoppers, I want to be completely honest with you from the start. I’m here to promote my best friend and artist, Slay. But more than promotion, I want to share our story—because it’s one that means everything to me. I’ve known Slay for almost 20 years. We grew up side by side. Ever since elementary school, I’ve seen his love for music. I watched him write, sing, perform, and slowly grow into the incredible artist he is today. From his very first small-stage performances to his first TV debut, I’ve been there in the crowd, clapping the loudest, always his #1 fan. Some of you might remember him, he actually debuted back in 2017 under the name LOANN, but at the time he didn’t get much attention. After that, he shifted his focus to producing, and he quickly became a respected K-pop producer under the name LAS with multiple charting hits. But even while producing, I always knew his real dream never changed: he wanted to be a singer, a performer, and a true K-pop star. And I’ve heard his voice—I know how powerful it is. I always encouraged him to take the leap into a solo career, because I truly believe that once people hear his voice, they’ll be captivated just like I was. Almost a year ago, we took a leap and started our own entertainment company together. It’s been a wild journey, and now we’ve reached the moment we’ve both dreamed of: Slay’s first official solo release is finally here. For me, this isn’t just a song drop. It’s watching my childhood best friend step into the spotlight he’s always deserved. It’s seeing a dream we both believed in for decades finally come true. I couldn’t be prouder, and I just wanted to share this moment with you all. If you’re reading this, I hope you’ll send Slay some love and good energy as he takes this huge step. He’s not just my best friend—he’s an artist with so much passion to give to the world. instagram: slay.las tiktok: slay9711 youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNo_bEtzick submitted by /u/Dismal-Trip1092 [link] [comments]
