I’ve struggled with memory loss since I was a child. At pretty much all times, memories of the past few weeks are fragmented, and anything beyond a few months ago is 99% gone entirely. Because of this, I’ve developed a very strong attachment to media- Especially music. Kpop has been my favourite genre for the last decade. Listening to it helps me connect with memories I no longer have access to, and the feelings I’ve associated with specific songs. For example, I don’t remember almost anything from a beach vacation trip I took with my family in June of 2021. But I remember having Twice’s new release “Alcohol-Free” on repeat at the time, and how it made me feel in the moment when I listen to it again. I only know the date of the trip because I can search online when the song was released. Another memory is the weeks I spent falling asleep to BTS’ “Blood Sweat and Tears” in 7th grade, when I had just moved to a new house and hadn’t become comfortable in my new bedroom yet. The song became familiar and comforting for me as a child; it put me to sleep every night. I don’t really remember any of 2022, besides listening to Newjeans’ debut album and “Generation” by TripleS on my walks home from school. Kpop has become such an meaningful part of my past, honestly. So I got into kpop around mid 2017 and I've noticed that through the years the amount of views mvs got on youtube has changed. At first it was increasing, but now when I look at the amount of views I see on mvs, they aren't as high anymore as compared to 2018 or 2019. I know there isn't one reason why this has decreased, I know that throughout this time period youtube has changed the way that views are counted. I've also always believed that a lot of the streams have gone to spotify. But there's one other thing I also noticed. I feel like fans aren't as obsessed with streaming for views anymore. This might be because I myself went a bit more to spotify for music, but also because I'm not as active of a kpop fan anymore as I used to be. I'm a lot less in the youtube comments then I used to be back in 2017 till 2020. So have others also noticed that fans seem less obsessed with youtube views? Just out of curiosity, if you chose five member female only and male only group from any kpop group but it must only be restricted to just one member from that group. Here's the context. MNET just dropped the new season of SWF called WORLD OF STREET WOMAN FIGHTER. Instead of sticking with mostly Korean crews, they’ve invited teams from all over the world. On the Korean team, you still have the big names like Leejung, Aiki, Gabee, and the rest of the original leaders from the viral first season. But then you also get crews like AGSquad (former members of Royal Family), the current Royal Family, RHTokyo (led by the incredible Rie Hata), and more. Basically, they brought in some of the best dancers on the planet, so naturally everyone was hyped for the Class Mission, especially for the leader class. In past seasons, the leader class always stole the show. NOZE’s “Hey Mama” routine went viral, Vata’s “New Thing” (produced by ZICO) was a massive hit, and Bada Lee’s “SMOKE” (Dynamic Duo ft. Lee Young Ji) blew up. With world class talents like these, fans were expecting another hype track and choreography. But things went sideways when Woozi from SEVENTEEN dropped the leader class song called “ECHO!” Viewers have been super vocal about disliking it. The consensus is that it simply doesn’t measure up to previous leader class tracks, and it’s being slammed as the weakest of the three songs this season (compared to Rookie Class’s “FLIP FLOP” by Gummy ft. Since and Middle Class’s “Ridin’” by Lily, Jiwoo, and Kyujin of NMIXX). On top of that, fans of the show are finding it cheesy that Woozi threw their names, “HoshiWoozi”, into the chorus. To give more context, the song samples a famous Korean folklore song, but they swapped out the original storyline and dropped their own names "HoshiWoozi" which most viewers thought was corny and tacky. A lot of fans showed disappointment that Hoshi and Woozi overlooked the fact that the dancers should’ve been focal point and instead made themselves out to be the main characters. They feel that the track leans too heavily on artist ego and shifts attention away from the dancers. I’ll also point out that this show is very popular with the GP, many of whom aren’t K-pop fans. Unlike the international K-pop fans who follow the show, a lot of the people voicing discontent don’t even know who Hoshi or Woozi are. This is the clip that introduces the songs. Kpop industry has tons of shows where they interview kpop celebrities, so this supposition might seem a bit strange for all of you. But the thing is, I kinda wanted to see more nardwuar style journalism in kpop. The thing is kpop has been so commericalized(well right fully so because its all about the money baby), and so structaulized (the only ones ive seen close to being somewhat similar to nardwuar was that journalist from the show mmtg from sbs)that sometimes most questions are so similar when I see these interview shows? So when I see a lot of I would say independent journalists(well nardwuar is technically part of a radio crew, but you would see what I mean by that) in hollywood who just happen to meet celebrities in hollywood just walking by and ask questions that is so astonishing to me. I feel like this is just not seen in kpop overall, because I feel like they always should have like pre planned schedules and everything. Also the reason why I do think that this needs to be more of a thing is because I feel like the questions should represent what the fans are curious about instead of the same rhetoric questions(kinda similar to the first point I made.). Without the backup or funding of big broadcasting institutions and companies with economic objectives, I feel like it would convey the honesty more for celebrities. Though I personally think it might be hard considering how controlled the kpop industry is and the existence of stalkers and sasaengs(like it might be hard for independent journalists to be born in here also cause companies would need some kind of verificaiton to make sure they are not ill intentioned people hoping to get a chance with them), I do hope that we have some kind of freedom that is enjoyed in the United States. For me, it was when I started pre-ordering albums. For a year or so my only connection was Spotify. But when I started getting deeper and deeper down in that rabbit hole, I realized I wanted to support my groups more. The packaging and everything was so unique compared to western labels. Very collectable. So that's when I started throwing money at the hobby. And now I go to concerts whenever I can 😆 How about your experiences in becoming a true fan? Update: I realize that my wording may not be the best. When I say "true fan", I mean a fan who went from casual to more invested in the group/music/genre. In the beginning, I'd only listen to Spotify, not checking anything else out ever. But now I buy albums, go to concerts, etc. Those who don't do that are absolutely still fans. You know, when you like a song but there comes a certain part that for some reason you don't like or it irritates you, in my case (I know they are not considered Kpop but I don't care and I'm going to mention them), contrary to many, I did like Gnarly, however, when Megan says "OMG is this reaaaaal?" it irritates me a lot, I imagine it's because of the effect they put on it but I don't like it. I've had the privilege of attending j-hope's concerts in Thailand, Macao, and soon in Berlin at Lollapalooza. It's disheartening to see claims that he's the least popular member. Metrics like photocard and fancam streams don't define an artist's popularity. j-hope's live performances showcase his exceptional talent, charisma, and professionalism. Every review highlights his ability to engage and entertain the audience. As a fan, I'm excited to see his future projects. Compared to other artists, j-hope's shows stand out – he's a true performer who knows how to captivate his audience. Even casual music listeners had a blast at his concerts. It's time to appreciate j-hope's hard work and dedication rather than perpetuating misconceptions about his popularity. Don’t know how many of you are in illit spaces but the fans have been begging them to try a horror concept pretty since much forever. Their recent mv is less “illitcore” (think of mvs like magnetic and tick tack that are pure illitcore) and more “spooky”. At least more spooky adjacent. It talks about creating a monster,it shows the girls in monster costumes and at the start they’re throwing a bunch of their magic wands at a huge track to be tossed off. Plus it says the magic is gone and they should bring it back. I’m aware the lyrics are talking abt anxiety but I’m curious about the concept So is the recent comeback going to give fans that horror concept?? Personally I love illitcore and think they should stick to it but at the same time an artist has to experiment at some point and can’t stick to the same stuff forever. During the Karina scandal, I’ve seen so many AI generated pictures of Karina wearing MAGA hats, with Trump, etc. These posts have been going viral getting ridiculous levels of engagement. Despite how terrible that in itself is, Karina was one of the most deepfaked idols last year in Korea. Just now SM released a statement revealing some people have already been prosecuted and jailed for deepfake crimes related to the aespa members. So to see western K-Pop stans freely feed her face to AI engines for their stupid fanwars is… crazy. Like, western K-Pop stans are no better than the “knetz” they criticize for creating deepfakes of idols. What’s the difference here? Stop feeding idols’ faces to AI.
