27M here. Just writing about my feelings for female kpop idols. I've never had a gf or relationship or anything. Been out of college for several years now. I think for me kpop has replaced school crushes. I used to have crushes on classmates. Obviously I usually didn't talk to them but when I did it never ended well. Now in the workforce I don't interact with young women anymore. My coworkers are usually older and/or married. The only place I can see women around my age is kpop. Now I just crush on kpop idols. I used to do anime but 2D just doesn't do it for me anymore. A kpop idol is a real human being and I can fantasize about what it's like to know them or talk to them irl. i can watch their videos and vlogs of their lives. Read their life story and admire them. was wondering what people think when fanart draws idol's bodies when they have no reference point? Example that prompted this being someone drawing a male idol shirtless with a bit of a tummy when 1. this idol has never shown their body before and 2. I'm aware this idol had expressed something akin to body dysmorphia about being on the bigger side. the artist clearly just found "fluffier" bodies hot and thus wanted to draw him as appreciation/encouragement(he'd mentioned dieting recently), though in practice it seemed uncomfortably invasive to me since he's outright skinshy. I'm wondering if this was me being weird abt weight on my part, but also he just, like, doesn't look like that. He isn't all abs and he has some muscular squish, but in no way does he have a dad figure. Then I thought, well, why draw people you've never seen halfdressed halfdressed. Is this a consent issue? Fantasizing what this person looks like under there in a bit of an invasive way? THEN I wondered if it was strange for fanart of real people to exist at all and immediately realized I was lowkey pitching "is it problematic to portray other people because noticing details like moles from photos makes you a freak" which is a nothingburger. I'm aware this is all stupid. I do draw, but I do fictional characters. I take inspiration from real bodies for my character art, but I've never specifically tried to portray real people that wasn't fully referenced, so I feel like I'm overthinking it in general. Caricature art is a touchstone of portraiture, and obviously many historical depictions of humans are stylized in ways where we point and laugh at what medieval painters did when painting babies, so I'm sure I'm just being overly touchy with art. There's a lot of fanart I find beautiful and "respectful", so I'm not sure what the thing specifically that makes me uncomfortable. I guess my original feelings fall into the general ongoing question in "objectifying" idols + what does it mean to do that actually. I think it's easy to identify when people write out strange fantasies abt real people in posts, but I feel like I'm not as adept at recognizing intent in visual mediums, nor where the line is drawn(lol). I guess this also presumes that artists have a responsibility with their art to portray the people they draw "well" or "accurately"(for some loaded terms) vs freedom of expression, which I feel is dangerous to assert and I don't want to do that, but well, that doesn't stop me from feeling weird about what some artists' expression. Sorry for the ramble train of thought, if you can pick out a coherent idea to address be my guest (Also in a similar vein, when people do genderbend art of idols, what does it imply about their conception of gender+why are they even doing that+how come with male idols, from the same artist, some of their girl versions are flat and some got lumps the size of mountains. I swear, being a K-pop fan is like a full-time job sometimes. I missed Stray Kids’ last comeback announcement because I wasn’t glued to my phone that day, and don’t even get me started on how I found out about ENHYPEN’s tour after tickets were gone. It’s so frustrating trying to keep up with schedules when every group is dropping teasers or tour dates out of nowhere. I’ve been burned too many times, and I’m over it. A friend told me about KpopSync, and I’ve been using it for a couple of weeks now. It’s pretty handy for pulling together comeback schedules and concert info for groups like ATEEZ, BTS, and others without me having to check ten different platforms. It’s not flawless - sometimes the updates lag a bit - but it’s cut down on my stress a ton. I actually got a heads-up about a fan event for Lisa’s solo project before my group chat did, which felt like a win. But I’m curious if you guys have better ways to stay in the loop. I started look what countries it was topping in specifically in addition to the global chart and I spotted it so far in Taiwan, Japan and Thailand so it made me curious where else had the song gone viral and why. So jungkook was wearing merch for a webtoon that promotes sexual assault, murder, and abuse of children, women, and the elderly? And I’ve just learned of this- the only reason I learned was because a post from an infamous snark Reddit came up on my feed. I usually don’t participate in snake reddits especially since they are usually mean rude and wish nothing but ill will upon those who they are made about but this is a genuinely serious and disgusting? I feel bad about this and I really don't know if anyone else goes through it but so far it's happened twice to me. It first started with bts I became a fan at the end of 2018 and they introduced me to kpop all together and aside from them I got to discover so many good kpop songs even though I didn't stan those other idols. Becoming a fan around that time makes it seem like I would have so much time before they would enlist but it still felt short. So before they went to the military I was really into them I even became a victim of the the canceled concert from COVID and I think maybe that's when things started going downhill. Around the time on social media it was kind of hell as a bts fan just constant fanwars to the point where I moved from my bts account to an anime account and focused on that more. Doing that made me seem to lose interest in bts I don't want to blame the fans because everyone always says your a fake fan if you let fans ruin a group for you but it really was the case at the time. I didn't completely unstan but I didn't keep up with everything all the time like I used to. Then came the talk about enlistment the word every army would avoid saying. I heard around the time yoongi got a lot of hate but I think that's around the time I was barely on my bts account so I really didn't see the extent of it but I know it was bad. They eventually started going one by one and then in pairs and that's when my interest started dwindling more. My main problem is I prefer full group content over everything sometimes if a member is missing I can't watch it or will take a long time to watch it. This was a problem for me when yoongi went on hiatus for his shoulder. I could barely watch the content without him. So what happened when everyone started enlisting? Basically the same thing. I feel bad because they released so much content especially their own solo work from fans but I literally didn't and still haven't listened to some of their full solo albums because of my preference for group stuff. This does not mean I've never heard any of their solo songs I just never did full listens of the albums at once. Like for yoongi I heard plenty of songs from his solo album for his tour and even had them in my playlist but there is also like 2 or 3 I haven't heard. I watched the MVs I even watched his last concert before enlisting. Same for the other members who released music before going. Except with jimin and jungkook I listened to their full albums because I was trying to get back into bts more. I didn't keep up with stage performances and all that though. I couldn't even watch a full episode of run jin when he came back. My point is it felt like I was losing interest since it wasn't the whole group and now I feel like I'm getting like that with seventeen as they start enlisting except it might be worse because they aren't all going so close together. I got into them in 2023 so it definitely feels like I had barely any time but again it was little things that made me avoid watching content like when watching some content from a few years ago when jun and minghao were missing such as going svt I struggled to finish some episodes that didn't have them. Now with jeonghan and wonwoo gone it's just repeating like it did for bts. When scoups went on hiatus it was also the same for me and I just feel bad about it because it feels like a ridiculous reason to lose interest in a group especially after being so into them. For bts I never stopped being into them I guess the solo work kinda did it's job with that. So I'm currently trying to get back into them before they release their group music next year. Also for more about me liking full group content. A month before wonho left monsta x I was getting into them. Learned their names and was watching content and then that whole thing happened and he left the group. I unfortunately lost interest since this was a member completely leaving not something temporary and that was it for me with them.
