Hoping I don't get downvoted for this post but I’ve been revisiting a lot of 2PM’s old stuff lately and it made me think about how crazy it is that Jay Park’s departure in 2009 (which at the time felt like a career-ending moment) ended up being the best possible thing for him. A lot of fans would probably agree. Back then, it was heartbreaking to see him go. He was literally the face of the group and fans were devastated. But looking back now, you can really see how it set him free. He went from being an idol under a super controlled system to building his own empire, eventually becoming one of the most influential figures in Korean hip-hop and R&B. Not only did he prove everyone wrong, he built an entire lane for artists who didn’t fit the traditional idol mold. And he did it while staying authentic to who he is (the Seattle kid who loves music, hustle, and tattoos). Had he stayed in 2PM, we might have never seen him bring K hip-hop into the global spotlight the way he did. Sometimes the worst moment of your career really does end up being the thing that changes your life for the better. I think 5th gen has way more groups with different and distinguishable concepts compared to 4th gen. that being said, what group has your favourite concept? there's so many to choose from! my favourite is kiiikiii's concept. imo they are pure nostalgia. CL was one of the first female K-pop idols that really got me into K-pop and if I remember she seriously tried breaking into the Western market. Had big collaborations, was fluent in English, and had the YG backing. She was just as talented. Yet, despite her head start, she never seemed to achieve the same kind of international recognition and pop culture status that Jennie (and BLACKPINK in general) enjoy today. Whenever I hear people saying K-Pop is having a bit of an identity crisis, I reply "GOOD!!". Why are people so short-sighted? Isn't it a good thing that K-Pop is moving on and progressing even if that naturally causes a transitionary phase like we are going through right now? Yes, a lot may be failing in your opinion but we actually have groups trying new stuff and not playing it safe. Look at aespa's year, BOYNEXTDOOR's year, tripleS' year, le sserafim's year, ATEEZ's year, TWICE's year, NMIXX's year and I could keep going on. So many groups are actually trying to advance themselves and take on new challenges and pushing themselves. Also, we have had some great debuts this year which will set up the fifth generation. KickFlip, Hearts2Hearts, CORTIS, ifeye, KiiiKiii, IDID and so on. These groups all have great potential. We also have SO MANY idols producing and writing their own songs. Many idols have made their solo debuts and had solo comebacks this year. It feels like a lot more effort is starting to be put into b-sides this year. Many albums are actually cohesive. Sure, sometimes its rough and disappointing, but I know this year will end up being instrumental in shaping the future of K-Pop and there is so much work being put into K-Pop right now that I know this transitionary phase will lead to somewhere wonderful! submitted by /u/SnooOranges829 [link] [comments]

there was once a point in time where k-pop dances were simple, because the vocals stood out much more. the ancient scriptures are being rewritten, and I'm not able to keep up with it. don't get me wrong, l've been loving the choreographies that have been coming out recently. but it sucks knowing that I only come back to that song because the dance is fun to do, or l like watching the idols perform the dance. look at "Into the New World" by SNSD for example. simple dance, still fun to look at, but most importantly you're able to go back and listen to the song without thinking about the choreography. hopefully this doesn't sound like me yapping too much. but it does get to a point where I wish they could just focus more on sound quality. It’s only been, like, two months since CORTIS’s debut, and the internet has already spawned a dozen OTPs shipping them as star-crossed lovers. Don't get me wrong, ship what you want, but it's wild how fast the narrative locks in. (Friendships fanon are mostly tolerable if executed well) I swear, the fandom immediately latched onto these "forbidden love, pining from across the practice room" tropes and is glamorizing the hell out of it. It's giving "I've read more fanfiction than I've touched grass." And I'm gonna hold your hand while I say this: some of y'all need to log off and remember what it's like to interact with actual human boys. If you watch their chaos and your first thought is "that's so gay," you're welcome, that's just a normal, chaotic, late teens boy group interaction. They're not reading the subtext because there is no subtext; they're just being dumb and cute with their friends. When I was 8 or 9 years old, K-pop started to become popular because of Blackpink and BTS. Sometimes there would be some MVs on the cable TV I had at home, and whenever BTS DNA came on, I would freak out on the couch, even though I didn't know who it was. Sometimes Blackpink would also appear, and I would be very excited. At that time, I didn't have a cell phone, so all I saw about K-pop was what was on TV. Over time, I started listening to Blackpink more, around 2018 and 2019. Then, around 2022 and 2023, I started listening to other groups, mainly because of Twice. From then on, I started following several different groups, mainly SM and YG.
