I typically don't speak openly about the obvious influence (and/or replete) of Black culture within the K-pop industry, because many discussions have and continue to be held, but one thing thats recently has been grinding my gears in the engagement from fans and fashion. Recently, I came across some videos from Xikers and one of them (new to the group so I don't know the members name) was wearing jeans (double layer) and I seen various comments...many laughing and questioning the outfit. I'm aware many individuals today are terrible when it comes to analyzing (or just discernment) the things in front of them, but the comments really pissed me off, because with the music and dance style, you could 100% put together why he's wearing the fit and the influence. Hoping I don't get downvoted for this post but I’ve been revisiting a lot of 2PM’s old stuff lately and it made me think about how crazy it is that Jay Park’s departure in 2009 (which at the time felt like a career-ending moment) ended up being the best possible thing for him. A lot of fans would probably agree. Back then, it was heartbreaking to see him go. He was literally the face of the group and fans were devastated. But looking back now, you can really see how it set him free. He went from being an idol under a super controlled system to building his own empire, eventually becoming one of the most influential figures in Korean hip-hop and R&B. Not only did he prove everyone wrong, he built an entire lane for artists who didn’t fit the traditional idol mold. And he did it while staying authentic to who he is (the Seattle kid who loves music, hustle, and tattoos). Had he stayed in 2PM, we might have never seen him bring K hip-hop into the global spotlight the way he did. Sometimes the worst moment of your career really does end up being the thing that changes your life for the better.
