Idk if this makes sense but I was chatting with a friend today about how I wasn’t surprised when V dropped Layover because the album (and his singles following Layover too, tbh) really fit the vibe of the kind of music he’s always recommended. I get that a lot of idols don’t have much say in their musical direction since companies usually call the shots more often than not. And even when they do get some freedom, it’s tricky because they have to balance everyone’s tastes in the group. But I’m curious if there are idols (or groups) who do have creative control but still put out music that feels way off from the musical direction they’ve expressed they favour. Of course, it’s normal to experiment here and there, but I’m just talking about when you consider their entire catalog as a whole and the genres they stick to - does it make sense for them based on what they've expressed/shared? I love current kpop but I also miss the groups I was obsessed with as a teenager. I miss the extreme guy liner and the intense desperate vocals. The strong concepts and story telling MVs. Hello everyone! It's been almost two months (apologies) since I posted the fourth annual survey for LGBTQ+ Kpop fans and I'm delighted to share this year's results, as it was my first time compiling all the data after u/anonourmouse gracefully asked me to continue this special tradition. Before we get to them, I have some disclaimers and changes, so please read! The survey was posted on r/gaykpopfanboys, r/kpopthoughts and r/kpoppers. It was open from June 1 to June 7 and it received 314 responses. This post will be different from last year. I'm sharing the overall top 10 results for groups and soloists first and then the top 10 ult biases + queerest Kpop songs by predominant gender and orientation. I'm also sharing the top 3 results for each gender, sexual orientation, and romantic orientation (except for Trans Women/Fem, which had zero responses. Where are the Dolls?! 😓). The full results are linked at the end of this post on a spreadsheet. This time, I skipped every "N/A" as an entry (if someone did not give an answer). The "queerest songs" and favorite soloist questions were the ones with so many empty entries. As it was done in previous years, I've made a brand-new Gaypop 2025 Spotify playlist of the top 20 most popular songs overall. You can see all of the songs on the spreadsheet with the full results. 18 respondents identified as 2 genders, 29 as 2 sexualities, and 25 as 2 romantic orientations. If someone selected more than one identity (ex. "Gay/homosexual, Queer"), their answers were counted once under each of the listed identities, which means some of the math won't add up perfectly. I removed 6 responses from the dataset: they all identified as cisgender woman/fem, heterosexual, and heteroromantic. From being called cold and expressionless during aespa's earlier performances to now wowing everyone with her facial expressions and presence - Dirty Work is seriously a great era for Winter, and I’m so glad people are recognizing her effort. I especially love how she incorporates those evil smiles into her performances as they just fit Dirty Work so well! Her first verse is amazing too, and she has such great eye contact with the audience. In my personal opinion, as of now, I think she has the best stage presence in aespa after Ningning. Perhaps this comes down to the way SM has marketed Johnny over the years (his vocals skills are rare and his rapping is typically cringeworthy English lines with little flow, nor has ever had a standout dance moment apart from the fuckass cherry bomb dance that people take the piss out of every other week) but I feel like nctzens only see Johnny as the hot guy and not a lot more. I do not often see Johnny fans themselves talking about his talents, rather just his looks. You scroll through twitter and people with him as their pfp or in their username or just nctzens in general just praise his looks, whether it is his haircut or his muscles. You go onto their accounts and there is not one post about his singing or rapping or dancing, only his visuals. For some reason the most scandalous thing he has done is cut his hair according to these people. How can you claim to stan someone and not uplift their performance at least? I also feel like people only use him in shipping discourse because they can use the fact he is tall and muscular to fulfill their stereotypical homosexual agendas on Asian men. (which is a completely different can of worms within kpop spaces) I rarely see people actually discussing his actual impact to the band and fandom culture through his JCC episodes, there are so many inside jokes that began within these, as well creating bonding moments between him and members. A lot of jokes also have his involvement in too even when they are not from JCC. (Not talking about ones where he is the punchline.) He is also a frequent attendee of formal events and seems to be a go to guest for those sorts of things. The fact he is a fluent English speaker definitely helps him gain these sort of connections. Hell he went to the MET Gala! Not to mention if you want to talk about his idol career, despite not being given the opportunities to stand out he still gives a good performance (something more difficult when you’re taller than other members by a large margin).
