1.398. The Best K-Pop EP Ever? (Fe3O4: Forward)

  • 1 week ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

Fe3O4 : Forward by NMIXX was a record that I was highly anticipating earlier this year. It not only delivered but exceded way higher than my expectations. This "review" is like a look-back into the EP 3 months after it was released. To preface this, I'm a person that really loves production, and I think this EP really struck that hard enough. This EP has some of the most interesting sonical choices I've ever seen in K-Pop, and honestly I would LOVE to see more of it. I'd also like to add that I've been a fan of NMIXX but it has honestly been an up and down trip with them, I was not the biggest of the second EP in the same trilogy, Fe3O4 : Stick Out. So, even though I wanted them to create a new release, my expectations were not super high. But, oh boy, I was knocked out when I first listened to this. Tracks High Horse and Ocean were really beautiful. The production is super lovely, especially on High Horse! That mix from a somber melody to breakout drums is something that's super interesting and something I haven't really heard in the K-Pop space before. Tracks Know About Me and Golden Recipe were my least favorite tracks back then for two differing reasons. I thought that Know About Me plays it way too safe compared to the others, while Golden Recipe's chorus was something that was a bit questionable. After 3 months of reflection, though, I have to say that these songs definitely grew on me a lot more and I honestly can't stop repeating Golden Recipe now. Slingshot and Papillon are my real winners here though. Here's the experimentation I wanted and here's the production I needed. The iconic papillon intro serves as one of the best opening sequences I've ever heard while Slingshot is probably my favorite K-Pop song of all time. It's all over the place, you don't know where it's going to go and that's the plain beauty of it. I really hope they would continue towards this direction! I just really wish that this mini album got the love it truly deserves. JYP, please push this EP further. Fe3O4:Forward might not be for performance, but it definitely is a producer's dream come true. submitted by /u/untangledbox [link] [comments]

1.399. I wish people would just accept that they like generic basic music without trying to make it into something more.

  • 1 week ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

This was inspired by Katseye's Pitchfork review and the backlash to it. I think there's a back and forth between two types of people when it comes to music discussion and it's not just a kpop thing. Generally fans of pop music love to try to individualize the music they listen to according to their identity and then get personally offended when someone calls that music generic. There is nothing wrong with liking top 10 hits but you also can't expect to be considered one of those people who have an eclectic/"good" taste. Part of having an eclectic/"good" taste is sifting and filtering through the music you listen to and you just can't do that if your palette is the one that is widely accepted by everyone and is the cultural norm. That's why trendy music has the reputation of being generic, average, basic, "the norm". You can't be special and quirky AND be into popular stuff there's got to be a trade off you know. Historically too, the counter culture, the indie, the alternative has always stood out from the dominant culture. The idea of "cool" literally comes from the fact that you don't adhere to the norms. And that's why critics are attracted to this style of music because what's the point of being the tastemaker if you are just propping up what everyone already likes. I just think that the language we use to talk about our tastes tends to frame it through superiority. People attach their identity to it which makes it hard to have fruitful discussions about the artistry. Music that is too challenging is not going to be easy to digest and therefore it's unlikely to be accepted en masse. Now everyone will look derisively upon people who try to branch away from the norm and say "not like the other girls" as an insult. It's never going to be an insult though. Like it's just high school popular kids bullying the nerds and the art kids. That's it. Also the whole idea of "let people enjoy things" being used as a way to end deeper music discussion is also counterproductive and I will argue anti-intellectual. People who tend to have deeper music discussion are generally the ones super passionate about music and keep up with more than just the music. They are interested in how the music works and want to discuss the artistry and the idea of artistry itself. If all you listen to is what is trending, what is propped up by the industry and the corporates you aren't really bringing anything new to the table are you? I just think it's terrible how music conservation has degraded so much over time especially in pop circles. Contrary to what people would think about me I think pop music can be very very artistic and kpop has excelled in it but nowadays every discussion is "let people enjoy things" and that's just so sad. submitted by /u/avrilsower [link] [comments]

1.404. Jungkook Deserves Better — Why the Hate After Military?

  • 1 week ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

Hey everyone, I wanted to share some thoughts about Jungkook since his return from military service. It feels like he’s been facing a lot of unfair criticism lately, and I think it’s important we talk about it calmly and respectfully. Here are some things I’ve noticed that seem really unnecessary: Jungkook wore a cap that said ā€œMake Tokyo Great Again.ā€ From what I can tell, it was just a fashion choice. Yet some people reacted very negatively, accusing him of political intentions without any real context or explanation. It feels like people are reaching too hard to find faults where there aren’t any. During Jin’s recent FESTA performance, Jungkook was sitting quietly, supporting Jin in a low-key way. Instead of appreciating his presence and respect, some people accused him of trying too hard to get attention or wanting to be ā€œpickedā€ by Jin. This seems really unfair because just being there quietly should not be seen as attention-seeking behavior. Jungkook has always been humble and reserved, and it feels like people are twisting his natural personality into something negative. Another serious issue is that a while ago, someone broke into Jungkook’s home while he was serving in the military. Sorry if this is a bit late to bring up, but I think it’s important to remember that respect and support shouldn’t have an expiration date, especially when it comes to someone’s privacy and safety. It’s really upsetting that this incident hasn’t been talked about much or received the attention it deserves. No one should have to go through that, especially not someone who has sacrificed so much. What’s even more disappointing is that some fans within the ARMY community are turning on Jungkook and other BTS members. This kind of negativity and division goes completely against the message BTS has promoted for years — about love, respect, and supporting each other no matter what. Jungkook put his career on hold at the height of his success to fulfill his duty, returned quietly and respectfully, and has continued to support his group and fans without seeking the spotlight. Despite all this, the criticism and hate keep coming, often from people who once claimed to be his fans. I’m genuinely curious if others have noticed this wave of negativity too and what we can do to encourage more positive support for Jungkook and BTS as a whole. They deserve to be celebrated, not torn down. TL;DR: Jungkook has been unfairly criticized after his military service over harmless things like a fashion choice and quietly supporting Jin. He also experienced a serious invasion of privacy while serving. It’s disappointing to see some fans turning against him. Let’s support him instead. submitted by /u/Ok_Excuse323 [link] [comments]

1.406. Is it just me or is it weird when fans wait for certain idols to turn 18?

  • 1 week ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

I don’t know, but I’ve always found it uncomfortable when some fans treat an idol turning 18 like some kind of milestone just so they can start sexualizing them. Like yeah, they’re legally adults now, but the fact that some people are literally counting down the days feels so off. It’s not about age — it’s about the intention behind it. I’m not saying people can’t admire idols, but when turning 18 is used as a reason to suddenly say or post certain things, it just makes me feel uneasy. Anyone else feel this way? submitted by /u/Legal_Potential4720 [link] [comments]

1.407. NewJeans had a music video for every song they ever released (as part of an album)

  • 1 week ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

I was just thinking about how newjeans had some kind of music video for every song theyve ever released as part of an album. All their b-sides also got a music video and stage performance of some sort and were performed on a music show at some point or another. I know their discography is pretty small but I personally have never seen any other group follow this kind of strategy so was wondering if someone else has also done something similar. Apart from obviously having a big budget and a small number of songs on each album that would allow them to do so, I actually think it's a pretty good idea. A lot of times b-sides go unnoticed by non fans but having a music video will always reach at least some people beyond the core fandom. In any other group songs like ASAP and Hurt wouldnt have got a music video but giving them one I think helps cause it leaves the viewer with some kind of visual cue to associate with the song (at least thats how it's been for me). I also think it's the reason why their b-sides have pretty high streams as well. Do you think other groups (who have the money/resources) should try and make more mvs or promote more songs during music shows to bring more attention to the whole album as opposed to just the lead single? submitted by /u/PrimaryTomato3310 [link] [comments]

1.408. Will JYP debut a girl group for 5th gen?

  • 1 week ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

Someone brought up a point in how SM, HYBE, YG, and even STARSHIP have debuted their girl groups for the new generation. All of the big 4 have debuted new girl groups…except JYP. Normally there’d at least be trainee showcases for the trainees and there’d be rumors swirling around but I’ve heard literally nothing about JYP trainees or a new girl group. Now I do lurk when it comes to JYPNGG and about a year ago pictures of 4 girls circulated for JYPNGG but I have reason to think that that team has been scrapped since there’s been no updates since. So….that leads to my question. Will JYP even debut a 5th gen girl group and if they do I personally would hope it’d be a group similar to TWICE. But I also wouldn’t be surprised if the company skipped this gen. submitted by /u/lamningwon [link] [comments]

1.409. What is going on with K-pop styling? Another idol sagging and wearing a shiesty

  • 1 week ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

The first two pictures are of Kang Yuchan from A.C.E for his upcoming solo debut — his single will drop on 25th. I honestly don’t understand what’s happening in K-pop lately. Why is a Korean man sagging his pants and wearing a shiesty? What’s even crazier is in the third picture: from20, the CEO of Way Better (the company Kang Yuchan is currently signed with for his solo activities) wore a durag a few months ago, apologized for it, and even filmed a whole video about learning cultural appropriation… just for his company to turn around and do this now? Why do companies keep going in circles like this when it comes to Black culture in K-pop? submitted by /u/Nervous-Bat-8227 [link] [comments]
