I have some question about I.M from Monsta X

They are clearly trying to to appeal to a boy fanbase as well, even the merch looks like some Essentials streetwear. I really like the creative vision of the group and even knowing who was in the studio with them, like dammmnnnn. I already listen to genre similar like that from opium and travis and ect, and I don't mind having more, they're clearly having fun and experimenting. Also got me out of my Kpop slum that I have had for awhile, like daaaaaammn. People keep saying how much they sound like other artists but tbh, IDC. music has always been about sampling, referencing, and flipping sounds. picasso once said “good artists copy, great artists steal” and t.s. eliot said “immature poets imitate, mature poets steal.” the point is, true artistry isn’t ALWAYS about inventing something from scratch, it’s about taking influences and making them your own. that’s exactly what they’re doing. they’re not just ripping off, they’re collaborating, crediting, and pulling from the culture they grew up in. they’re internet kids, and their sound is rooted in hip-hop. that makes sense, people connect with that vibe right now, same way they do with carti, travis, or even underground names like 2hollis. and what really makes them stand out is that unlike most kpop groups, they’re also catering to a male audience. it’s not just polished pop aesthetics, it’s streetwear, fashion-forward, hip-hop infused energy that feels just as cool for guys as it does for girls. for a new group, they're exciting, not trying to overhype them but I can't wait to see what more they can bring as they progress and get better. submitted by /u/itsnikkie [link] [comments]

So I have been a stan of my ult boy group, TVXQ! since early 2004 and whilst watching a show with U-Know, they were discussing the group name origins and a thought that popped into my mind about group names and it bugged me as i am also a fond linguist and like learning about different languages and so I decided to investigate but to no avail. So being new to Reddit I thought I would ask fellow k-pop redditors if their ult/fave groups are know by a different name, nickname, abbreviation anywhere in the world other than the name they debuted within Korea. I thought I would also add this in to show what I mean with my question 🙂. In Korea TVXQ are known as Dong Bang Shin Ki Abbreviated as DBSK, which is written in hangul (the Korean alphabet) as 동방신기 and in hanja (Chinese characters) as 東方神起. It is translated into English as "Rising Gods of the East." Because Chinese and Japanese also use Chinese characters, the hanja name of the band is used in those countries, but is pronounced differently. The Japanese pronuncation is romanized (written in the Latin alphabet) as Tōhōshinki and the Chinese as Tong Vfang Xien Qi abbreviated as TVXQ! Another example I can think of is the same for Girls Generation as in Korea they are known as SNSD, apologises in advanced if I am wrong. People give reasons as to why non-kpop/bad kpop win award shows all the time but then suddenly stop applying that logic when it comes to Lisa. Lisa won (and this is no hate to her), because she is famous, her song is the most westernized or "normal" out of the nominations, she had big popular western artists on the song, and the VMAs could not give less of a fuck about what is and isn't kpop, they just want to make moments and get buzz. I'm going to keep the groups anonymous, as well as myself incase she comes across this and happens to be on this sub. I am hyperfixated on a boygroup (10 years) that has been in hot water recently due to their brand choices and their marketing choices, particularly with one member. My friend, lets call her B, dislikes this boy group for good reason. We were talking just now, and her favourite happened to win a VMA which I wanted to talk about - despite me being upset my fav had lost, I was happy for hers. I brought up how I was upset and had hoped the ranking was fairer, to which she questioned why he should've won it. She then goes into this whole thing about how she dislikes the group and antis one member, so - me getting sick of her bringing it up over and over again - told her to stop talking about it if she dislikes him so much. I told her I was hyperfixated, AKA - an indicator for her to stop as I'd already felt bad for it beforehand, and then she proceeded to talk about that member in particular and how she antis him. We haven't spoken for 33 minutes, I don't think I'm going to for the rest of the night as I'm pretty upset with her. I don't know if I'm overreacting, but it's tiring having someone tell you the same thing over and over again especially if they KNOW you like a certain group. She can dislike them and anti them, I don't care. Okay, hear me out—I love Lara Raj the talented, gorgeous, queer, authentically loud fashion queen and I love that she’s unapologetically proud of her Indian heritage. But... what’s going on with the constant oversized bindi + mega maang tikka combo? Authentic vs. Aesthetic Lara has openly said she wears the bindi and Ohm necklace as a reclamation of pride and representation. She even brings her own bindis to sets, aiming to make them “fashionable” and “fire” for brown girls growing up like her — in a world where she was made fun of for it as a kid. Many Magazines praise her as a pop baddie blueprint. Her accessories aren’t fluff — they’re identity. Why It Feels Off (Not Because of Lara) Repeating Stereotypes, Not Revising Them: There’s a difference between weaving cultural symbols into a fashion story you own—and layering them on as the identity. When every look expects the same Indian markers, it risks turning rich culture into one-note representation. Lara slays in looks that merge South Asian cues with modern fashion—like a subtle silver bindi + nose ring grounding a high-glam, Y2K-inspired ensemble. It can feel powerful, expressive, and authentic. These symbols come across as if they are a personal storytelling, not staged gimmicks. I adore Lara Raj and what she means to representation—and I appreciate the intentionality. But when fashion becomes a checklist of cultural signifiers, it stops being expressive and starts feeling performative. Can we get styling as dynamic as her identity? More than often the way her styling gets executed feels… stereotypical? Instead of cultural representation evolving with the fashion, it often looks like outdated “ITV villain aesthetics” pasted on top of otherwise great looks. Fashion is can be daring, unapologetically experimental, and go beyond the bounds of artistry. But every time Lara’s plastered with the same jewellery on stage, it doesn’t feel like representation — it feels like stereotype. And then came the massive maang tikka, gaudy bindi, and golden Bajuband/Armlet and some Mehendi/Henna to add that extra oomph. Suddenly it felt less like a cohesive look and more like a checklist of cultural props. It’s like her “Indian” identity is being boiled down to what the West or sometimes the Koreans, think Indian fashion is: a giant maang tikka + dramatic bindi combo, no matter the outfit. Apparently that’s enough to say: yep, she’s the Indian one. Indian fashion is so much bigger than that. Even Indian celebs today spend months coordinating outfits where heritage complements the styling, not swallows it whole. Jewellery has context, time, and place. But with Lara, it often feels like her entire Indian identity is reduced to OTT accessories. We already know Lara is of Indian ethnicity. We already know she’s representing a community that often gets overlooked in K-pop. That fact doesn’t need to be hammered home by throwing every stereotypical piece of jewellery on her that screams INDIAN. Her stylists need to understand that culture can be a layer of her identity, not her entire personality. So yes, I’m confused, minimally bothered—but deeply hoping Lara’s styling team really gets that her culture isn’t just decoration—it’s her narrative. I'm not a huge Shinee fan by any means but I do love Lucifer and Poet | Artist. The music video of Hunter by Key popped up on my home page and I was curious so I listened to the song, and I really like it. Sonically it gives me The Weeknd vibes, specifically Take My Breath, and I love that type of sound. It's a short song (something I've noticed in more songs in general lately...) but it feels full and complete, with the chorus hitting me like a train the first time I listened to it. The synth in the background and Key's voice fit together perfectly, and I also love the edm sounding bass that gives the song so much gravity. This man's voice is certainly very versatile, and I love the high notes he gives in the last chorus. Speaking of chorus, the sudden pause in the synth is SO COOL and keeps the song interesting and suspenseful. Although I wish the bridge was longer, it's definitely one of my favorite songs right now. I also just love the lyrics talking about basically wanting your lover to devour you (figuratively), as well as merging with them and becoming one, it's so hot and so epic. I also love how the music video is basically selfcest, which, slay. On top of that, I've listened to the whole album of Hunter and although not all the songs are for me, none of them are bad by any means, and I love Trap and Want Another (this one gives me aespa vibes lol). I was really excited for CORTIS when they were first announced. When GO dropped I had no ides what to make of it, and even now I haven't decided whether I like it or not. Since then, I've been anticipating FaSHioN because I thought it would help me decide how to feel abt the group. Now that it's dropped... I'm still conflicted! It's catchy, the lyricism is cute, but it feels a little repetitive and I would have appreciated more effort. I think I will keep an eye on them and wait for more music.
