I watched Produce 101 Season 1 so you don't have to (Episodes 1-2)

I notice that the first season of Produce 101 rarely gets that much attention in international spaces. I decided to document my thoughts on PD101 for entertainment purposes. This is also the first survival show I've watched in length. Warning: I am a massive hater Episode 1 The episode starts off with the classic "101 girls, 1 dream, who will debut?!??!" premise. The host, Jang Keunsuk, heavily emphasizes that the audience will be the show's producers. I find this extremely hilarious as we all know what happened to the Produce franchise after the first two seasons. Anyway, we got a JYP plastic pants jumpscare. Clearly the show's editors were proto-r/kpoopheads users. Proof for the skeptical For people who are unaware, the trainees introduce themselves by walking into this room with 101 seats, all numbered. At the very top is this giant #1 throne. Who chooses to sit on in it? None other than Heo Chanmi, who I'm convinced has a spiritual connection to Fu Yaning. Mnet's editing is super obvious. All the trainees are shown remaking how scary she is and how insane it is that she's already debuted. While not as ambitious as Chanmi, the Jellyfish Entertainment trainees chose to sit in the top 11 zone. Also, everyone's jaws collectively dropped as soon as they saw Somi was representing JYP Entertainment. After that, we got to see some of the auditions. First were the Starship Entertainment trainees. I'm absolutely in love with Yoo Yeonjung's voice. I can't believe she got just a B! It's shocking to see contestants receive comparatively low grades for performances that would be seen as extraordinary today. Then was Kim Sohye. To be honest, I felt bad for her. She clearly didn't want to be on the show, but man, what the hell was that performance. Sohye's performance was followed by another mid one. The DIA girls audition was pretty underwhelming, in my opinion. I do wish Dani debuted in T-ARA instead of Hwayoung though (fuck that bitch). The best audition in this episode was from Jellyfish Entertainment. Kim Sejeong and Kang Mina specifically caught my eye. Sejeong is such an amazing singer and Mina's dance is so eye catching. Another performance I liked was from Jeon Soyeon. Without the benefit of knowing about I-DLE's massive success, I would have voted for her back in the day. Bae Yunjeong, also known as the human incarnation of Satan, gave the DSP trainees a D grade for not shaking ass. Um, weird. I would've gave them a C personally. Park Hayi, the show's oldest contestant at 28, was basically called a hag by the host. At least the mentors all roasted the shit out of him. Even though I sympathize with her for facing ageism, I can't deny her singing was really bad. Next was the creme de la creme of flop performances: Yoon Seohyung's IU cover. I'm convinced it was a publicity stunt because I can't believe anyone would have the confidence to sing that song as their audition. This is also the moment of the show that I realized the PD101 set looks like the backrooms, like one of SM Entertainment's old box MV sets from hell. Thankfully, the remaining few auditions were good. I can't deny that Heo Chanmi is skilled, but who told her to turn Don't Stop The Music into a ballad? The Pledis trainees went off. As for Somi, I thought her performance was B quality. Her voice has this bright poppy quality that I like, but I don't think she performed to her full potential. The trainee who I think was done the most dirty was Kim Juna. Her voice is really, really good, but she only got a C because she couldn't dance on the spot. Personally, I don't give a shit if an idol is bad at something if they're extremely talented in another area. Just stick her in the back of all choreography and you'll be fine. Episode 2 First voting results! Ham Yeji going "wtf, I'm in 101th place" was really funny. Here, we got to see the remaining auditions. To be honest, I don't think this batch was as notable as the ones from the previous episode. I liked Han Hyeri's team even though the judges were hating. I found them super adorable. Choi Yoojung briefly mentioned learning sex ed, which really makes me remember this show is from 2016. I don't think today's trainees are even old enough to know how babies are made. I'm guessing the producers didn't know how else to reach the one hour mark, so we got another succession of bad auditions. I actually wasn't a fan of the 24 Hours performance, although Chungha saved it with her insane freestyle. I honestly thought she practiced it beforehand. Risa Ariyoshi's performance was a bit hilarious. They hyped up her jaw-dropping, earth-shattering visuals only for Bae Yunjeong to remark that she has the skill of an elementary schooler. After the auditions were over, the mentors sorted the girls into different letter grades. A for the best trainees, F for the worst, and so on. In 3 days, the girls would all have to perform "Pick Me," simultaneously the worst and the best Produce song. Yes, it's annoying as fuck and deserves to be in the CIA's special interrogation Spotify playlist, but the EDM beat drop is admittedly sick as fuck. The purpose of the letter grades was to sort the girls into training groups. To be honest, the training really annoyed me. I barely got to see the mentors give the girls actual vocal and dance lessons. There was a lot of emphasis on 'hard work' and very little on technique. I thought this was a missed opportunity and really shows what's wrong with the trainee system. It's like they value the appearance of perfection and grinding a ton without valuing the journey there. The trainees got to call their parents for the first time. I admit I felt a bit sad for the girls. Also, wow. The show pushed Sohye to an insane extent, which I thought was a disservice to the trainees without much screentime. One thing I liked was how the trainees appeared to be nice to each other despite the psychological struggles they faced. I honestly expected some anger from the trainees toward the ones who were falling behind. Anyway, at least they're all free from Produce hell now. Overall thoughts Just to get the negatives out the way, fuck the rigging (although this season was considerably less rigged than the later two). I also disliked the training system as you can tell. That said, I will definitely be tuning in for more Produce 101. I admit the editing makes it super addicting. If you asked me to vote at this point, these would be the trainees (not conclusive) that I would pick: Kim Chungha, Jeon Somi, Jeon Soyeon, Kim Nayoung, Kang Mina, Yoo Yeonjung, Kim Sejeong, Kim Juna, Han Hyeri submitted by /u/Aurelian369 [link] [comments]

Blackpink “Boombayah”, “Ice Cream”, “How You Like That”, “Kill this Love” Soshi “Mr. Taxi”, “Lionheart”, “Oh” Le Sserafim “Crazy”, “Antifragile” Big Bang “Bang Bang Bang” Super Junior “Sorry Sorry” 2NE1 “I Am The Best” Newjeans “Super Shy” Illit “Magnetic” Rose “Apt” Jennie “Like Jennie” Huntrix “Golden” (these two were in the halftime dance show) And some others I didn’t recognize. I only got there about 10 minutes before kickoff unfortunately so there were probably more beforehand. They definitely had a classics appreciator on the staff though, was nice they didn’t just pull from the latest hits. The rest of the match atmosphere was kind of a disappointment though, I was hoping there’d be a dance zone or mini games like they sometimes have, or even a kpop fan meetup, but nothing like that. Still a nice experience though. submitted by /u/dettret [link] [comments]

Filo engenes or any filo/non fans who might know, as a nosy person who lurks in every community even if I’m not part of it, i’ve been seeing quite a few posts in this site and elsewhere saying the philippines might not be part of enhypen’s next world tour and i’m genuinely wondering why there are thoughts like that. Did the last show there sell poorly or is there another reason people are thinking this? the last show seemed packed from what i saw or was that just the camera angle? I’ve always assumed a ph stop was guaranteed whether they’re reducing or adding stops because the fandom there is just so big and passionate (correct me if i’m wrong). The country has also been included since the very beginning so it would be a bummer if it’s skipped especially since it’s one of the stops i always look forward to for the fan projects, interactions, and fancams. I also feel like the members have an emotional attachment to that moment when filo engenes randomly sang shout out during manila stop for the manifesto tour so it’s hard to imagine an enhypen world tour without a ph stop 🤔 submitted by /u/Iettertomyself [link] [comments]

481. Katseye is surprisingly popular. Googled more than Blackpink last week in US. Katseye was costly, but Bloomberg says it’s paying off. Even their Tiktok training is working

  • 4 days ago schedule

I used KIOF (2023) and Babymonster (2024) for comparison as newer groups. I heard about Katseye’s breakout on Bloomberg, Gnarly and Gabriela are taking off. I had no idea they were getting that big until checking Google trends. That’s when I realized Bang PD was validated. I was still thinking he’s so right about big trends in Kpop, but wrong on how to react. He called the peak of Kpop and the need to reduce reliance on superfans and grow casual fans. This last part still isn’t really happening in Kpop because of declining music revenue. The fear is whether superfans pockets are deep enough if the economy weakens. It cost a lot, taking Hybe’s profit below JYP’s. it took a while, but it’s finally paying off. This explains why Hybe and Geffen are working together again on a Japanese group. I noticed how well trained Katseye is for Tiktok. That’s working for them too: Bloomberg data puts them at 3rd for new Tiktok follows among the top 50 artists this month, with 1.4m new followers in previous 30 days. There’s a lot of obviously planned and even choreographed videos. Viewers like the a capella singing Katseye sometimes posts too, tying it all back to their core role as musicians, and showing off their talent. I wish my fav Hyeran had this kind of opportunity and camera quality during Brave Girls, to show off things like her popping talent. I get the idea to diversify from BTS, but I wonder about the Ithaca and Quality Control acquisitions. submitted by /u/hyeran_jainros_fc [link] [comments]

I don't know how or when I discovered this song, but I discovered this song a few years ago, just like that. Dahye - Bad Blood And it's just so good? The instrumental is amazing and the performance? She's such a good performer and vocalist. I leaned that she was a former BESTIE member, and while I never followed the group, her song just came up on my recommended and it was not a disappointment. Another song that I think is an underrated great song is this one. Kang Xiwon - Passionate Love It has no MV unfortunately, but she's a great performer too and this song is catchy as hell. Unfortunately, Kang Xiwon hasn't released music since 2019, but I'm still obsessed with this song. submitted by /u/Moonbunny120 [link] [comments]

486. Was Kpop always uptight like this?

  • 4 days ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

Sometimes it feels like some of stuff in the past wouldn't fly now. Exemple: ● Kpop Male/Female friendship. We barely see people interact anymore. I miss the type of friendships 2ne1 & Big Bang had. Now we barely get to see friendship, we rely on scraps of our favorite idols interacting. I think it's all due to the constant shipping. ● Choreography. So much choreography has been under fire for absolutely no reason, back then I feel like all it would have happen was Korean broadcasting channels censoring the choreography and causing it to be changed like Up and Down by EXID was. ● Outfits. There's a lot of outfits that people criticize but back then it was very common to have uniforms type of stage outfits like the Oh! by Girls Gen and Hello Venus. Now the slightest top and skirt gets flamed by netizens, remember when Idles Klaxon lifeguard fits got criticized because of the hotpants they were using, almost the same ones the Girls Gen use. I agree idols bellow 18 shouldn't use clothes like this but the adults one shouldn't be shamed. ● The songs. Songs like Miniskirt, ADTOY, 24hours, Full Moon, Abacadraba are all very highly regarded by 2nd gen kpop stans and even praised. Now we've got a bunch of choreography getting slammed for moves like twerking or stupid ass shit that is not even that deep. Iam crazy or Kpop stans is getting more uptight by the second? submitted by /u/-strawberrypizza [link] [comments]

488. YG quarterly earnings released, headline: "Yang Hyun-suk Laughs Again" + JYP most profitable of Big 4

  • 4 days ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

That's the Google translation, but what a headline. Thanks for making me laugh again at business headlines. English version of full report is on YG's IR Disclosures page, the Report on Business Performance posted 2025.08.11. Babymonster and Treasure tours helped get them back to profitability. Blackpink's should help in latter half of the year. YG's net income is surprisingly low compared to peers, even in earlier years, given Blackpink is the biggest female group and their luxury deals are the most prominent in Kpop. Maybe Blackpink members themselves get a bigger cut of those? Or their other groups hadn't taken off as much, and there was no other girl group until Babymonster last year. Report shows YG's net income of 8 billion won For context, JYP posted 69 billion won last quarter when I started writing this, and just reported 36.3b Hybe: 15b won SM: 30.9b won Hybe has the biggest revenue, about 3x JYP and the two most profitable years among Big 4. Hybe's sales are bigger because of acquisition. The streaming revenue of Ithaca holding labels is roughly on par with Hybe's Kpop the past 4 years. But past two years JYP's been the net income leader. I got the impression Hybe's spending on Katseye hurt their profit last year. It's starting to pay off now (7 day link). I'll focus on Hybe later. JYP mature groups. Lower costs, higher profit I think JYP benefits from two mature girl groups; another mature group, Stray Kids fills the BTS enlistment vacuum. The name recognition lowers 'customer acquisition cost' for tours, which have become more profitable in recent years for the top groups. Little YG investor relations info I notice on YG's site, they don't have any kind of presentation breaking down any details. Even their peers' earnings presentations aren't as anywhere near the detail of the 10-Qs required by the US from publicly traded companies. YG just links straight to the income statement KRX (Korea Exchange) site. Is there some Korean version I'm not seeing, as far as conference call notes, etc? (The site in Korean just seems to be the same.) There's only the minimum required disclosures on Korea's DART site run by the government financial regulator, their SEC. Anyone notice the interesting SM report? SM does have a much higher net income in their last quarter, that seems to be related to accounting for their purchase of DearU shares. I have seen it and will break it down separately. The music business net income is lower than JYP's. There seem to be noncash investment gains of the consolidated SM-DearU. submitted by /u/hyeran_jainros_fc [link] [comments]

489. I'm tired of people acting like it's crazy to expect good out of your faves

  • 4 days ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

I've recently been seeing so much debate over celebrities (both kpop and non-kpop) and problematic stuff they've said or done and it's kinda getting frustrating at this point. I'm gonna start off by saying this isn't about any specific event, it's more general because i've seen this multiple times, I just want to share my own take. It's not crazy to want the people you stan to be decent people. Every post I see on every platform whenever someone gets "cancelled" is "celebrities aren't politicians" , "not everyone is perfect" or "you're holding them to an impossible moral standard so you can hate". All this stuff is true to some extent, people do make mistakes, people are ignorant sometimes and yeah they're not politicians, I don't expect them to end every world or social issue. But at the end of the day they're humans before being a celebrity and I will treat them as such. That means having empathy for them but also expecting basic decency from them. How is it ridiculous to say you want the people you support to have basic decency and align with your morals? It's okay to hold celebrities to your moral standards (as long as you're not a hypocrite about it and not even holding yourself accountable to those same standards) Also it's not absurd to want a celebrity with a big platform to use it for good. Of course that's not their job but idk about you, if I had a big platform and could use it to spread awareness about whatever I wanted to millions of fans I would. Sure they're always people who're hypocrites and don't care, they only want to join a hate train or have a "valid" reason to send hate to someone they dislike, that's like pretty much half of cancel culture. I noticed this a while ago that most people don't care about what xzy did or said, they just enjoyed banding together to drag them and/or make jokes about it only to act like it never happened 6 months later. Or they only drag others but find a way to excuse it when it's their favorite group or themselves. However that doesn't invalidate the genuine criticism others make, you can criticize that first group of people but if using that to excuse whatever an idol did or said is just really unfair And yeah sometimes people do need backlash (keyword: backlash, not hate, not death threats) because that's how you grow. Like I said before people make mistakes, sometimes you don't know that something is bad or why it's bad but someone calls you out on it, you acknowledge that you did something wrong, educate yourself and change. But that's really not gonna happen if fans are defending you like you're an angel and act like the people criticizing you are all trying to sabotage you out of jealousy. I'm not acting like I'm a saint who's never made a mistake and who's better than everyone but I'm just really tired of people acting like not wanting to support a person who has views you don't agree with or has done bad things is crazy to me. Once again kpop idols are people just like us so why should they be exempt from basic human decency. Obviously every public figure, even normal people, show a curated version of themselves to everybody and hide whatever they want to hide but I'll assume they're a decent person unless they give me a reason to believe otherwise. However, you'd never catch me posting "xyz would never" because once again I don't really know them and if they do or say something that doesn't align with my morals I'm obviously not gonna blindly defend them and act like they're somehow deserve some kind of pass because i idolize them so much or because "their music has nothing to do with it". submitted by /u/periwinkle-grey [link] [comments]
