Ik this might be rlly unpopular, but I come across so many people trying to categorize certain idols as having “healthy bodies” just because they seem to have gained a bit of weight. Isn’t this so toxic? Unless we’re talking about idols who have personally shared that they’ve been focusing on balanced diets or lifestyle changes for their health, we actually know nothing about what’s going on with their bodies. For example, an idol might be bloated because of their period, from eating a little more than usual the past couple of days, or even from something as simple as salty food. Then they appear in public and suddenly they’re labeled “healthy” because people assume it’s weight gain. Imagine how it must feel to know that thousands of people noticed your stomach wasn’t as flat or your face was puffier that day. There’s nothing wrong with those things but having it pointed out by thousands of strangers can’t be a fun experience. A lot of people defend this by saying it’s “praise” and that they’re encouraging idols to eat more and have healthier habits. But that so-called praise is essentially just saying, “We noticed you gained weight.” Even if gaining weight isn’t a bad thing at all, in an industry where idols are constantly pressured to be super skinny, I doubt every idol feels good being singled out like that. And on the flip side, automatically assuming an idol is unhealthy just because they look skinny is also harmful. Yes, some idols do go through restrictive dieting, but others are simply naturally lean or maintain their physique through hours of intense training. Speaking as someone who’s been a competitive dancer surrounded by other dancers, many eat perfectly normal portions yet stay slim due to the sheer amount of physical activity. For taller dancers especially, gaining weight from a “normal” diet can be harder. We can shift the focus away from speculating about bodies entirely. Instead of making comments on weight gain or loss, we can respond to what idols actually say about their health and well-being. If an idol shares they’ve been eating better, resting more, or feeling stronger, that’s when it makes sense to celebrate with them. I saw someone asking for examples of good K-pop group names, and it got me thinking. As a BTS fan, I’ve always felt their name just… works. It sounds right. Some group names stick instantly, like LE SSERAFIM — short, unique, easy to remember. And then you’ve got the nugu groups with names like “25car78be” or “XQ4nity” where you can’t even tell if it’s a password, a license plate, or an idol group. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that if BTS hadn’t blown up, their name might have actually been a problem. Especially outside of Korea. In the early days, “BTS” was a terrible search term. When I became a fan in late 2017, they were already big, but not “your grandma has heard of them” big. It still felt like discovering something underground and special. If I searched “BTS” on YouTube, I’d get walls of “Back To School” or “Behind The Scenes” videos before anything related to the group. Even before 2017, I’d see people in random comment sections mentioning BTS — one that stuck with me was someone writing “dashi run run run” — and when I finally tried to look them up? Boom. More school supply hauls and behind-the-scenes vlogs. And back then, a lot of their actual content wasn’t even translated yet, so even if you did find them, half the titles were just “BTS – [Korean text]” or fully in Hangul. It’s honestly wild to think about now. And it wasn’t just the abbreviation. I remember searching “BTS Danger” for the music video and ending up with Henry Danger behind-the-scenes clips. Like, I’m trying to show my friend this epic K-pop MV, and YouTube’s like, “Nah. Here’s Nickelodeon.” Fast forward to now, and “BTS” is basically a cultural keyword. Even if someone doesn’t know a single song, they know who you’re talking about. But it really could’ve gone differently — there are so many rookie groups today whose names make them invisible online. If BTS debuted in 2025 with that same name, they might have been buried under a mountain of search results forever. These days, when “BTS” is used for “behind the scenes,” some ARMYs think it’s just a cheap way to bait views (and sometimes… yeah, probably). But for me, it’s just a reminder that timing and luck matter. They didn’t pick a flawless, SEO-perfect name — they just worked hard enough to make it theirs. Hey everyone, I don’t usually post stuff like this, but my wife just finished writing a book about K-pop. Full disclosure: I know basically nothing about K-pop myself (couldn’t name more than maybe two groups if my life depended on it), but I’ve seen how much time and energy she’s poured into this project. She’s been researching, writing, and editing for what feels like forever : late nights, stacks of notes, random music videos playing in the background and honestly, I’m proud of her for seeing it through. Context: I was a kpop fan back in 2018/2019 then not long after I stopped. (because at that time I was just a really really casual fan of the classics like blackpink and BTS) In 2021, I discovered a kpop group and gave kpop another chance and I fell in love with kpop again. Now, I've been trying to like more groups but none of the groups seems to hit the same as that group.
