The HYBE expansion and all their different projects

Let me preface this by saying this isn’t a reflection of how I personally feel about K-Pop, but rather something I’ve been observing for a while now. K-Pop, at its core, is Korean pop music. It has built a massive global fanbase, and some would even argue that it is mainstream. I’m not here to tell you that’s wrong, but I am here to suggest that K-Pop might never be as mainstream as some people hope it will be. At least, not in the way Western pop dominates the global scene. Let’s talk about radio play, which still plays a significant role in defining what’s “mainstream.” I’m Belgian, and I listen to the radio regularly. Off the top of my head, here are the K-Pop (or K-Pop-adjacent) songs I’ve heard played more than once: “Cupid” (English version) by FIFTY FIFTY “Dynamite” by BTS “My Universe” by Coldplay & BTS “APT” by Bruno Mars & Rosé “Kiss and Make Up” by Dua Lipa & BLACKPINK “One of the Girls” by The Weeknd & Jennie And of course, “Gangnam Style” by PSY What do these all have in common? Except for Gangnam Style, they’re either fully in English or collaborations with major Western artists. That pattern isn’t a coincidence—it’s part of a larger reality. We can argue all day about how frustrating it is that many people don’t give foreign-language music a chance, and yeah, it is frustrating. But most of the time, it’s not out of malice. People just tend to gravitate toward music they can understand. Lyrics often shape emotional connection, and when that connection is missing, people tune out. TikTok has shifted the music landscape significantly. You could argue it's also become a landscape to explore new music and for songs to go viral. Plenty of K-Pop sounds have gone viral there recently. But even on TikTok, I’ve noticed that the viral sounds people latch onto are often instrumental—no lyrics, no language barrier. And look, I don’t think there’s a problem with this. In fact, I think most K-Pop companies understand the limitations of language in the global market. That’s why we’re seeing groups like KATSEYE, which are clearly built with international success in mind. I’ve already been hearing Gabriella on the radio nearly every other day, which says a lot. It's not hugely different from let's say Senorita by G-Idle for example, but it's in English instead of Korean, and therefor it gets radio success much easier. Yes, there are occasional exceptions where songs in other languages go global. But unless it's in English or sometimes Spanish, it's just that: an exception, not the norm. The K-Pop model clearly works. It’s innovative, polished, and incredibly marketable. That’s why it remains such a global force. But if the goal is to reach even more people, the most effective (and predictable) route is through English-language releases or groups that embody the K-Pop formula in an English-speaking format. Again, none of this reflects how I want things to be—I’d love to see people give more music a chance, regardless of language. I can think of dozens of Dutch songs that are absolute masterpieces, but they’ll likely never be heard outside of Belgium or the Netherlands. Meanwhile, one of the few Dutch songs that did go viral internationally is... well, let’s just say it wasn’t exactly a cultural gem. It’s frustrating, but it’s also reality. Seriously, I've been trying to spot the signs that the teasers are AI, and I swear I don't see it. They're not sloppy images; they look pretty elaborate... Furthermore, it's a shot in the foot to openly admit from the very beginning that you used AI, when most companies try to deny it until the very end. I feel like it's not AI or not completely AI, but they're trying to create ragebait to get the comeback going and build anticipation of whether the MV will also use AI. Am I the only one that feels weird about send offs ? Like besides them being super expensive they really aren't a good experience for both fans and idols in my opinion. The idols have to meet so many fans when they just finished performing. They are tired, hungry, and just want to relax before their next tour stop but have to interact with so many people. On the fans side you have to spend so much money trying to POSSIBLY see the idol face to face and have them sign your stuff. You can't even have a solid interaction with them because they are just trying to sign as much merch as possible then get to the next section. As someone who’s has been a carat for 3 years and has been doing studies on marketing, it’s obvious that pledis doesn’t have any idea what to do with svt, like it’s their biggest group and they don’t have any idea what to do with their careers, the pandemic got them really bad, before that it seemed like they had a plan to make them more popular but after that just comebacks and touring on the same countries, like some people like to blame it on hybe but hybe just gives the money and the rest is pledis responsibility ( same for their other subsidiaries), in my opinion it’s pledis mismanagement as usual… Some members have talked about going touring in other countries but the company always says it is a risk and shoot them down. Also don’t understand why they don’t confront the company about it 🤷🏻‍♀️ but okk. Now they are going to the military it is so clear that they are improvising some things, because in my opinion they should be doing solo work and showing more their artists side ( 13 tapes said hello 👋), even though I like the units, but I would love to to see that too. With all the success of Kpop Demon Hunters, we've seen time and time again that more and more people and idols are joining in and doing Golden covers. This also gives rise to certain criticisms and discussions because some consider that the result was not good, and of course any fan is going to take it as offense. Now, this doesn't mean that your idol or their talent is being looked down on. "She/He did it in the original key, your fav could never do it" "You don't know anything about singing" "You're talking about someone praised for their vocals, shut up" Yeah, we know that reaching high notes like those required by Golden is worthy of applause because it speaks to a well-trained voice and a wide vocal range. However, this doesn't mean that it's enjoyable to the ear; it can even be annoying and very shrill. Honestly, there are very few covers that I've liked by the time they get to the chorus. I know people here aren't fond of this group, and they might be lacking in synergy/talent, but nobody can deny that they have crazy star potential. From how much noise they made and how they ate up the charts instantly, I think they have the power to build an absolutely massive fandom if they play their cards right. HOWEVER, the group feels extremely unbalanced right now and that might be their Achilles' heel that ultimately holds them back from hitting big. Right now, we’ve got 4 rappers (and only one of them is really a rapper rapper), and just one vocalist - and while I love Youngseo and she's my fav, she’s more of a lead vocalist and cant carry the entire group alone. What they need - and this might be controversial but stay with me - is one more solid female vocalist and one strong male vocalist to even things out and feel complete. And wait for it..... this might be the most controversial take I ever posted on Reddit and I'm a little embarrassed to even type this ...... but please hear me out 😭 Somi. She’s been kind of going nowhere lately, and getting erased and forgotten by the public. Her releases don't seem to be making any noise at all. But I genuinely think she could work really well in this group. Her vibe is expensive, rich, and she’d mesh with the group’s energy perfectly. She's also close with Annie and Tarzzan so that's already a plus. And I also always felt that the golden ratio for a co-ed group is 4 girls and 3 guys IMO. It just works. Balanced visually, vocally, rap wise, dance wise. If any co-ed group is gonna actually break big, I always felt it was going to be with this structure.
