6. Has anyone else noticed the psychological manipulation idols go through?

  • 57 minutes ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

Hey everyone, I’ve been a K-pop fan since I was 16, and now I’m 23. Over the years, my perspective on the industry has changed a lot. There are things that seemed totally normal to me back then, but now I realize they’re actually kind of disturbing. One thing that really stands out to me now is how young some idols are when they debut. And it’s not just debuting young — many of them start training as kids, sometimes as young as 8 years old. That means years of intense training, pressure, and uncertainty at an age when they should just be living a normal childhood. I used to think that was just “how it works” in K-pop, but now I can’t help but see it as harmful. On top of that, there's the psychological pressure they go through during training. They're told there's a chance they might debut, but there's no guarantee. So they keep working, sacrificing, pushing themselves — not even knowing if it’ll ever pay off. That kind of mental strain, especially on kids, feels like emotional manipulation to me. Even in survival shows — which seem to be the new normal for debuting — the manipulation doesn’t stop. The pressure, the editing, the way they’re pitted against each other — it’s all designed to mess with them emotionally. Some of those ghost-related moments that idols used to talk about — where they genuinely seemed to believe something paranormal was going on — used to feel spooky or just part of the show to me. But now, looking back, they feel like another form of psychological manipulation. Like, were those things staged to create fear and stress for the sake of “entertainment”? We only see a small part of what actually goes on, and even that small part feels pretty dark when you really think about it. I can’t help but wonder what’s happening behind the scenes that we don’t see. Has anyone else noticed this or started to feel the same way with time? Or picked up on specific moments that made you uncomfortable looking back? submitted by /u/Difficult_Net_4318 [link] [comments]

7. HYBE needs to stop playing with KATSEYE

  • 1 hour ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

I LOVEE the girl so much and they have SOO much talent, potential, everything. Their performances are fire, their vocals eat, they're gorgeous and are getting SO much attention and opportunities (Lollapalooza, GAP advertisements, etc..), yet HYBE keep playing games with them. There are a couple big problems with the group that spiral into thousand little ones: Their music quality: I'm sorry to say it, but KATSEYE'S music sucks. Yes, they try 'different' things (especially w/ gnarly), but they're not exactly good things. Gnarly got SO much criticism at the beginning, and even though now it's calmed down and people think it's 'iconic', it's just going to come back to bite them. Gnarly went mega viral, but not for the right reasons. The lyricism was cringy and trash, the concept was good, but some ppl thought it was inappropriate, especially since they had a minor in the group, and the dance, even though it went viral later on, received backlash for its twerking moves (again, bc Yoonchae was a minor). Imo, the choreography was fire. Energetic, sharp, fit the whole intrumental of the song. The concept was weird, but cool, though some scenes were definitely questionable. The beat was really out of place sometimes, and they added some weird sound effects (the moans, slashing sounds) that sounded so weird all put together. And the lyricism was trash. OMD I was so disappointed with the whole song, it was everywhere at once, the lyrics were straight-up horrible, there was barely any promo.. it was SOO messy. On top of that, their music is NOT serious at all. Gnarly was such a silly song, with its horrible lyricism and weirder concept, and Touch, Debut and both their EPs don't give off 'serious music career', they give off 'trend-hopping'. Like, Touch was what worked at the time, and it wasn't even a relatively good song, it was just an easy listen. Then Gnarly came, and that was even worse. Their music is so unserious, and while HYBE and their fans are trying to paint them as 'artists', their music paints them as trend-hopping k-pop idols. Nothing special, but mediocre enough to get into the charts. And this is further proved by the fact that their first EP, SIS (Soft Is Strong) barely made ANY noise whatsoever. The songs were just easy listens, but they didn't have any substance, so it barely made any noise and just kind of disappeared. Also, the fact that their music seems so unoriginally uninspired. Like, take other groups like ILLIT, LESSERAFIM and NewJeans. Maybe their songs (though ALL of these groups, esp NewJeans music, LESSERAFIM's HOT and UNFORGIVEN album and ILLIT'S bomb are incredibly good music) don't give off 'serious music career' they're GREAT songs. The songs have good lyricism, great beats, a good concept, but most importantly, the members themselves take part in the writing of the song. Danielle, for example wrote the most songs out of all of her members, Yunah helped write Do the dance, and we all know that Yunjin helps to write and produce her own solo music. So while it may not give off 'serious music career', it comes off as more honest and has more substance bc the members at least took part in writing it. Another problem with their music is that it's so inconsistent. Like, we had Debut, then, we had Touch. The releases didn't make sense bc they were so different to each other. They started with this strong, performing, empowering concept and music style with debt (kind of like girl crush in K-pop, I think?), then suddenly did a 180 and released Touch. And the problem was that even though Touch went viral, it was nothing new or fresh. Pretty much everybody in the company was doing a cuter concept. ILLIT's sweeter, cute concept w/ Magnetic and I'll like you, ENHYPEN'S romance: untold album, which was a cuter, sweeter direction in their music, NewJeans w/ Right Now. It was nothing that stood out, because it was so mediocre. ESPECIALLY since ALL the other releases were SO good. ENHYPEN's album was amazing, ILLIT's music was so good, and their concept ate, and NewJeans' music and concept is always bomb. Like, Touch didn't even stand out, and it wasn't as good as the other releases. Then, after Touch, again a full 180 and BAM: Gnarly. Gnarly felt so rushed and out of place compared to their other releases, especially Touch that it was insane. Like, we had NO time to prepare or to adjust to receive this change in their music, style and visuals. It was so stupid, too, bc there was barely any promo and the song was not good. ENHYPEN transitioned from Romance:Untold to Desire:Unleash so good bc they had smth in the middle: Their Romance:Untold daydream version, which contained Daydream and No doubt. Daydream was a much sexier, stronger song than the rest of the album, preparing us for Desire:Unleash, while No doubt was a more pop song that still fit with Romance:Untold, so the transition wasn't exactly unexpected, and it was done so well. KATSEYE's just seemed rushed and quickly strewn in. 2) Their concept: The problem with this is that they have NO concept. No interesting storyline in ANY of their songs as well, and when you realise that groups like ENHYPEN are there too, whose concept is so beautifully written, produced and executed by both the workers and the members themselves, you realise KATSEYE really lacks in that. ENHYPEN's concept is SOO good, it's always interesting, beautiful and evolves and grows with the members, their music and their styles; NewJeans concept is so fresh and also shares a storyline in some M/Vs (OMG, Ditto, Get Up and Cool with You, ETA etc..); same with ILLIT, they do like a cute-creepy concept in some way and it is interesting and gorgeous every time. When you compare these groups' amazing storylines and concepts with KATSEYE's, which has none, you get less interested in their M/Vs and concept than you would if they had an actual storyline/concept that could evolve and grow with them. 3) The members' relationships and how their fans react: I'm not gonna pretend to know everything about their friendships at all, bc we only see what is in the camera; however, a lot of assumptions come from moments in Dream Academy, and sets me clear on who watched it or not by the following point: -Manon was bullied and excluded: No, she was not. She herself siad that living with girls was 'too much' and 'dramatic' for her, bc she hadn't done that before. However, NONE of them had, but they all sucked it up except Manon. She broke the curfew rules several times, and while others were warned, she got to leave happily and live with her aunt. Of course, while all the girls lived together, she would miss things, but that was her OWN choice to not live with them. Obviously, she would miss things bc she wasn't living with them, but that was not any of the other girls' faults at all. And Manon skipped so much practice. Yes, sometimes bc she was sick, but so many other bc she didn't want to come. And she didn't bother to keep in touch with the others to learn the dance. She showed up randomly. And the other girls and even the senior program manager, Missy, expressed concern for Manon's work ethic. -Daniela and Naisha hanging out: There's no problem with her hanging out w/ a former girl from Dream Academy, except that Naisha made comments about brown girls that excluded Manon. E.g: she made a comment on Lara's Instagram post about 'holding down the spot for all brown girls' when Manon was literally also in the group. It was weird of Dani to hang out with her, but ofc that's her own choice. However, fans also have to hold her accountable; if she's gonna hang out with someone who blatantly disrespected Manon, then her fans and Manon both have a right to feel a little offended. As well as the fact that people are SO obsessed with pitting BLACKPINK and KATSEYE against each other. BLACKPINK aren't lazy, they're inconsistent, which ofc ppl have a right to be mad abt, but BLACKPINK'S rookie era was even better than KATSEYE, and their music is better. Using KATSEYE to try to disrespect Jennie makes no sense. Yes, she's inconsistent with her performances, but she can definitely have amazing, show-stopping ones (Coachella 2019, 2023, and 2025, her Deadline Tour performances, especially her solo ones, her 2018 SOLO performance at mama etc). Like, why do you feel the need to include other women who have fought so hard as well for where they're at right now to uplift yours? It's so immature how some fans genuinely cannot uplift their group without bashing others. HYBE needs to stop playing around with KATSEYE, and give them the music, promo, budget and concept these girls deserve after all their hard work and talent. They have such a good group in their hands, and they keep messing up bc fans keep settling for the bare minimum in music quality, concepts and M/Vs. I know damn well these girls can hit high notes perfectly fine and would fit so many good, serious music concepts, so HYBE needs to GET UPP. submitted by /u/positions-deluxe [link] [comments]

9. how can i be more delusional, but in a healthy no sasaeng way

  • reddit.com language

This sounds so weird, but I wish to be as carefree as I used to be when I was getting into K-pop. I am aware (in fact I was very aware) if I get too delusional so I step back. I kinda want to go back into my SHINee era but not too much since I literally HAD to be delusional and be in my own bubble because whenever my bias get mentioned they start becoming sad or even insulting me for having a bias that passed away. There was even a time where I was constantly cyber bullied that it placed me in the pits of depression because all I wanted was to be treated like any other K-pop fan. In my opinion, that was too much for me and I never want to go back to that state. In fact, I never want to be in a situation where I literally had to be delusional in order to be a fan of a certain group due to how badly I was treated. And yes, my new ult is ATEEZ and it’s a much better group overall. I didn’t need to be delusional, and I could just genuinely talk about them and I am treated like everyone else. Sure I get the occasional, “better wash myself up good even though I’m in the 400s and they probably won’t see me” but I want to be delusional enough that they show up in my dreams every night. ATEEZ has been in my dreams occasionally since I went to their concert back in January, and I would get concert dreams of seeing x K-pop idols from time to time. I would love to see them more and also in general be a bit more loose. I do snap out of it quite easily, so I’m not worried that I will definitely have a chance with them and start running to South Korea by walking on water like Jesus Christ. I also want to find people who are just like me, not too normal but not too delusional. Just enough where we could say something stupid that will haunt us couple of years in the future while we’re trying to sleep and laugh about it. If anyone can give me tips, let me know. submitted by /u/asahilovesjjong [link] [comments]

2 minutes? 2 friggin minutes? Are you kidding me, JYP? That's all these girls get? After all the shenanigans you've pulled since KG's departure & after all those desperate attempts at generating hype over a rebrand of a group you've been exposed for mistreating, you give these girls a song that's barely over 2 minutes? I'm done. I'm so friggin done. KG & Kaylee dodged a bullet. As for the stans who are eating up this nonsense while pretending that KG's story wasn't real & that she's some liar who only wanted a solo, are you happy now? submitted by /u/GenoveveSimmons15 [link] [comments]

17. FORMER BIG COMPANY TRAINEES TALKING BOUT IT.

  • reddit.com language

So, I was scrolling through my YT timeline and saw one clip - VVS Brittney Joins And Leaves The Blakc Label. I was like "hmmm" then I checked it out and there was another in recc. (as you can see in the screenshot). So, my question is, Is it the marketing tactic now for smaller company idols who were former trainees of big 4 or big companies to come out with their infamous trainee stories? Previously I remember, back then in before 4th gen idols weren't this vocal about their former companies or previous trained companies comapred to how it is now. I may be wrong don't come at me for this since I am saying the things I know. So, now it seems it's a way to garner attention of a larger fanbase of those big companies. And I guess people like it coz they get to know what their fav idols have been like in their trainee days, how their fellow trainees / former trainee-mates says about them. Back in the day, most of the time we get surprised if we come to know that one of the idols of this said group was a trainee of that other big company before. But now it's like pretty much open for all. Everyone knows who came from which company to which company they debuted, etc, etc. What your take on this? submitted by /u/Daddy1007a [link] [comments]

19. Do you guys know about album stockpiling by companies?

  • 4 hours ago schedule
  • reddit.com language

Basically, let's say Group A sold 1 million copies first week. But actually, it's not organic because only 500k was bought by fans, and the remaining 500k was bought by the company. Here, the company resells the 500k albums under the "lucky draw/fansign/fancall events". like... if you buy from us, you'll get a chance to win the event. The more you buy, the higher the chance for you to get picked. Companies will hold numerous and multiples events until the 500k copies are sold. That's why you see many groups' lucky draw/fansign/fancall events last for 3 ~ 5 months after the comeback promotion ended. heck, even right before the new album release, they are still holding fancall events for the previous album. Is it okay to do that? I heard even big companies do it because of how important the "first week sales" label is for their artists. submitted by /u/tresnosliramu22 [link] [comments]
