this isn’t hate to the girls, but rather the company. and yes ik katseye isn’t kpop whatever. but this is more so abt hybe x geffen. the girls obviously can’t choose to be born a certain skin tone / ethnicity so this isn’t on them whatsoever, but rather the company and their attempt to profit off of the guise of “diversity”. katseye is definitely diverse in terms of the members being of different backgrounds, but more than half the entire group is of asian descent (one of them being half white too). the latina in the group is white passing, and the black girl in the group is light skinned and mixed with white. i can’t help but feel a disconnect with the diverse and global marketing of the group because it feels like a sneaky way to profit off of being “diverse” while still making sure certain types of diversity aren’t shown. the girls themselves are extremely talented though and are deserving of being famous & recognized for their skills, so i don’t wanna take away from that at all. it’s really more about the way the company handpicked the girls & the trainees in DA. as a black woman i do get tired of never seeing people who look like me, and having a light skinned or biracial person as my “representation”. now clearly katseye aren’t dolls made to represent every person of color, but the company DOES want them to be “relatable” to the masses, their race included. or they wouldn’t have made a global group with other races besides EA. yet i feel nothing. i do look at fatou as inspiring because she does look like me, but i don’t think she gets the attention she deserves. and it really gets me thinking sometimes like, do darker skinned people / black people never audition? i doubt it. they just get overlooked because companies never want their appearance in the group. i really wish companies weren’t so afraid to show what a lot of us people of color really look like. it’s another attempt to claim diversity while still trying to build a group of beauty standards. it’s fine if i get hate for this, this is just my opinion and i don’t expect everyone to agree or understand my point. at the end of the day this isn’t a significant issue but something i had thought about. submitted by /u/Affectionate-Link436 [link] [comments]
No MV. Two minute song that was spoiled for a month. What were they thinking? You have a grand redebut but you are not spending any money.. Why are you so cheap JYP. If you are going to release an Itzy reject then release a reject with dressed in a high budget package. Like Lesserafim’s Unforgiven! And you can tell losing two vocalists did a number on them as Kendall’s voice just doesn’t gel in this song at all. Maybe Camilla’s too but she fits the concept at least. While Katseye’s Debut was also short and had a low budget MV, at least it HAD an MV, wasn’t spoiled to death for a month, and was unique sounding compared to what kpop had at the time. And no one was saying members didn’t fit the concept. They all did and were able to sell it. Hope Girlset release a Touch level song a month from now and recover like Katseye did because it is not looking good. submitted by /u/mauvebliss [link] [comments]
First off, don’t come at me coz I just came across this while scrolling. So wanted to share it and also share my thoughts about it coz it’s been more than a month now. And twice had one more comeback for Japan in the midst of it. submitted by /u/Daddy1007a [link] [comments]

we all, as kpop stans, are constantly exposed to situations of overworking, starving and exploitation to group members and trainees. lately, i have decided to watch the popstar academy documentary on netflix, and one of my initial thoughts was the reocurring reference of the ‘lack of time’ and ‘rush’ the two labels were facing. now, the intensive training & development program was meant to last one year, which included some girls who had no previous experience in certain artistic areas such as dancing. when you are a huge record label like hybe you simply cannot deny how long you keep some trainees improving for prior to their debut. for example, txt’s yeonjun trained for 4-5 years before debuting in march 2015. so there seems to be no explanation for overpressuring innocent girls just so less than one third of them can be selected to be in a girl group, which btw will have schedules after schedules, tours, promotions, fan events, etc etc. in the beginning of the series, missy and other staff kept saying “oh we don’t have time” “we hope we can carry out the debut as expected” was it that difficult to not cram years worth of severe schedules into one year, all before a secret survival show that the contestants didn’t know of? and no deadlines, no expectations so the girls would have something concrete to work for? “how about we make them live together like a whole family, teach them how to complete each other, make them perform together as a group and then make them compete against each other for a dream they all have?” furthermore the consequences were also physical: lexie had injury which had to be treated with surgery, was on a weelchair for two days and came back after WEEKS of practice wasted, scared of missing out on the competition; emily with her foot fracture that unabled her to dance for 6 weeks (most of the time she was rank #1 in dancing). and the fact this is all normalized between the whole staff team is what upsets me the most. not one single bit of acknowledgement or accountability, and i’d risk pointing out a bit of manipulation. “you all have to be grateful because missy loves you more than you can imagine” well she for sure loves her paycheck a little more. this month, hxg announced an upcoming group that contains former dream academy contestants, which guarantees the preservation of their talents. however, they also mentioned that “the japanese contestants will participate in an intensive training program from october through december”. i sincerely hope these girls have previous experience because if hxg converts an already intensive 1-year t&d program (used in dream academy) into a 3-month one it would be the end of them. but as the excitement is bigger than the concerns, everyone seems to be supporting this collaboration and the survival show/training program. i am as well excited for the group but can’t help but point out how many things are and have been wrong here for a very long time. what do you all think? submitted by /u/F4LLEN_ANG3LL [link] [comments]

OuO; Idk why I'm here. But if I'm supposed to rant then okay- IT'S SO HARD TO FIND THE COMPANY I WANT TO AUDITION FOR! THEY ALL SEEM SO SUCCESSFUL BUT THEN I END UP READING SOMETHING ABOUT HOW THEY ABUSE THEIR TRAINEES LIKE VCHA. *who btw is debuting as Girlset and is a quartet* As a westerner who's always been taught if someone forces you to work longer than you want, you can just sue them or leave. But you can't do that if you sign up for it. So the only right option is to find THE PERFECT company. But that doesn't exist! submitted by /u/Big-Map9516 [link] [comments]

This might be a REALLY unpopular opinion, but I don't think KATSEYE'S music is really good; don't get me wrong, this is NOT a diss at the girl's talent, bc I find it so surprising every time they give us great performances with the music quality they have. But generally, I feel like SOME of their fans are trying to paint them as artists when their music is anything but serious is funny to me. Their music doesn't come off as honest, sincere or genuine; it comes off as a trend. Like, ppl want us to believe they're a global group, but it seems to me like they're just like a K-pop group. When I think of global groups, I think One Direction, Little Mix, Spice Girls, Fifth Harmony etc... these groups gave great performances and had great voices like KATSEYE, but their music DID give off serious career vibes. It wasn't about fitting a standard just for their fans to claim it didn't, and they bent different genres and had sentimental, sincere songs as well as upbeat pop-ish ones. Also, that the members took part in the songwriting/producing. When you put into perspective that the same company that debuted KATSEYE debuted LESSERAFIM, ILLIT, ENHYPEN and NewJeans... Apart from ENHYPEN, and at times LESSERAFIM, the other two groups don't exactly give off 'serious career' I'll admit, but their songs are REALLY good, and the concept EATS every time. As well as the members taking a part in writing the songs themselves. E.g. Danielle wrote the most songs out of NewJeans, so even if the songs weren't exactly 'serious', they came off as more sincere bc the members took a part in writing them. And the concept...it was SOO good. Especially with Ditto, it was such a good song with such an honest, sentimental message. Another example is Yunah helping to write Do the Dance. I'm aware she wrote like one or two lines, but it still gives the impression that at least she's thinking about helping in the process of her and her group's music. And again, their concept eats. And ENHYPEN, my god, their storyline and concept is sooo superior. We get so many different things from them that somehow all add up, which is what I want to see from KATSEYE. It seemed like from Debut, to Touch, to then Gnarly, and finally Gabriela, everything has been so rushed. Like, each release was so inconsistent and sudden. We had cute Touch in a universe where all the other groups were shooting cuter, sweeter concepts (NewJeans Right Now, ENHYPEN Romance: Untold, ILLIT Magnetic, and I'LL LIKE YOU), then did a full 180 to Gnarly. With barely any promo, so it was a big shock and came off as kind of rushed. For example, ENHYPEN's move from Romance: Untold to Desire: Unleash was smoother bc they shot a deluxe version of Romance: Untold that allowed us to ease into the darker, sexier concept of Desire: Unleash. Also, the fact that Jay took part in the writing and producing of Helium, so it came off as more honest. Ofc, I get it if KATSEYE don't need a concept, but they should release more serious music. Like, having Lara and Manon rapping 'gang' for a literal verse and calling it a day was crazy. I want these girls to blow up even more than they have, explore serious genres and build a career that could potentially win them SOO many awards, but for that, they need good music and concepts. For now, Gnarly was all over the place, and the lyricism...well. Touch, like I said, sounded like a song made to fit a trend. Not good, but kind of bland. SIS was kind of a hit and miss; Gabriela ATE DOWNNN, but the rest of the EP seemed like it was kind of empty. Gameboy and Touch kinda gave me the same vibes, and Mean Girls was more honest and sentimental, but it wasn't promoted enough. MIA seemed kind of out of place, IMO. I hope HYBE or them decide to give them better music in the future, prepping for a real, genuine career, bc with the talent, beauty and passion these girls have, they could easily become the next top band. It just pisses me off to have so much talent and potential wasted on music as hollow as that. THIS IS JUST MY OPINION, EVERYBODY'S FREE TO SHARE THEIRS!! submitted by /u/positions-deluxe [link] [comments]
I originally thought it was different groups going against eachother, but it was actually groups being split in half lol I realised when I saw the episode list that every group had a different episode but I was still confused when I found out why 😭 I was seriously thinking we'd have interactions with lots of groups 😭😭😭 submitted by /u/Gold_Meaning3688 [link] [comments]

So let’s go back to the Girls era. I remember when aespa was getting absolutely FLAMEDD (especially Giselle) for their stage presence/ dancing skills. And I definitely agreed with it back then but now people say aespa has improved like a lot to the point where they are perfect now and it’s just like no. Notice how aespa has had backup dancers for pretty much EVERY song since Drama now. And imo having backup dancers drastically improves (or maybe creates an illusion) that you have good stage presence. If you removed all the backup dancers for Supernova, I can assure you it won’t be as good. And that’s kind of expected because it’s 4 people on (usually) a big ahh stage like 2021 MAMA💔 But then like a year or two ago I stumbled across the choreography demos for Illusion and Girls. And when I watched those for the first time I was like… Wow, they kinda did the choreographers DIRTY. And this kinda brings me to my next point. I don’t wanna hear PIM about “Oh Bada Lee always has strange choreos.” or “No wonder Girls choreo was bad when it was made by Bada Lee.” I’m sorry y’all but Bada is an AMAZING choreographer and somehow is always flamed just because she dances with power and when I watched that Girls demo that she did for the chorus I was like her and her dancers did absolutely amazing and they had actual stage presence while doing it AND were only 4 people with 0 backup dancers and I know I’m yapping here but Bada Lee AND Rie Hata should NOT have been flamed during Girls era because when I look at their choreography they do it so much better than aespa which is bound to happen bc they are literal choreographers but then I saw a dance cover of Girls and tell me why they were like 10x better than aespa they did it with actual energy. Fast forwarding to now I will agree that aespa has DEFINITELY improved but not as much as people say they do. Winter has improved the most imo especially her facial expressions and her dancing (especially in Dirty Work) is much better, same with Ningning as well! Karina was always a great dancer but her facial expressions kind of looked (and still do) a bit blank. Giselle has improved but only by a tiny bit and again the only reason y’all think she is a MUCHH better dancer is because of the backup dancers but I’m telling you she still has a VERY long way to go. At the same time I’m like maybe it’s because they sing live so they have to tone it down a bit but like even the Girls studio choom fancams were REALLY bad and hard to watch💔. All I’m saying is that they are not really as good performers as people say they are now and still should work and improve which is probably what they are doing which I hope they continue to , because if they put their ALL into performances it would be absolutely top tier which they kinda already are but it’s just something that has been on mind and I had to let it out somewhere 😭 submitted by /u/Head-Surprise-3156 [link] [comments]
Seen this conversation happening a lot over twitter and tiktok, that post early 3rd gen, vocals have been de-prioritized. This conversation has been discussed quite a lot, even here, but I think it bears a larger discussion on how KPOP has primarily focused on performance and visuals and creating viral "sounds" for short form content. Now that KPOP has expanded its global reach, especially with a movie like Kpop Demon Hunters, whose soundtrack occupies the Billboard top 10, more people are looking at the genre to get their boygroups/girlgroup hit. They want the emotional ballads, stunning harmonies, fun poppy dance songs with solid synchronized choreo...but who is doing all three? I think its rare to find a group that encompasses all of that. Who would you say hits the mark the closest? Is that mark even achievable in this era of Kpop? submitted by /u/127ncity127 [link] [comments]
